Red Sea Reefer Tank Seal Failure

I have only reef'd in a flower vase for twenty years, my scope on squared reefs is very limited

Now I gotta look at your posts lol, this is so interesting, 20 years and only in a vase.

Just as I was replying to the other thread on this topic…Sorry to see another one fall to this.

Is there anything that can be done if we are around when this happens? Any sort of self sealing tape that can be applied to buy us enough time to drain the water into buckets? Or do we just bend over and kiss our tails goodbye?

My tank is downstairs on a floor over concrete, I hate that it isn't upstairs but no way I am risking it and the damage it would do. I had an ice maker hose and a dishwasher malfunction and do thousands in damage at the last house.

Wish I had the space. Moving next year and no basement so it will be going in the lower possible floor. I do construction daily, I'm not flooding my upstairs and doing more work at my house haha.

Yea... Don't ever buy a red sea tank because somebody on a forum had a problem. But to be fair I wouldn't own a waterbox. This one was bought second hand and has an unknown history so there's that too. I get it nobody wants to go through this but it is a very real possibility just by the nature of the hobby. It's a chance we all take. Water damage,ruining walls and flooring possible electrical issues all come with the territory.

Just wanted to advise other Red Sea owners out there. Last week my seal blew on my less than 2 year old tank (Peninsula 500). I acquired it when it was 6 months old and because Red Sea will only warranty the original owner, they will not repair, reimburse, or replace the tank loss of livestock or damage to my condo or unit below. This has been truly tragic and devestating, I am working with my homeowners insurance but the worst part of it all is finding other people who had this problem and RedSea not standing behind their products. Check your seals frequently. #redseareefer

Sorry to hear this happened. Unfortunately, most, if not all, homeowner policies have exclusions for this type of loss. Somewhere along this post there was a question on how to buy more time during impending seam failures. Bar clamps such as the image below are good option. Be sure to use some sort of soft padding such as hand towels inside the jaws. Squeeze too tight and it gets worse. This hobby should not be a race to the quality bottom.

do the proclears have an emergency drain? havent seen the overflow area of one of them and there arent many videos online.

Looks like mine has 2 drains and 2 returns (that come from a single pipe). Would one do these be considered "emergency overflow?" I am not sure tbh. Every tank I've ever had with a sump only had a single drain. I just took these pics for you, Proclear 150

Ask about a size limit. My insurance policy covered water damage from fish tanks. Exclusion 14 pages later, *tanks under 33 gallons*

No limit. No different than having a boiler setup for in floor heat.

This was a second hand tank and we know nothing about how it was handled so how about before trashing all Red Sea you consider this.

I'm still considered a newb in the hobby, but considering their past and even events recently, I don't see anything wrong with blaming them. I've owned a few used tanks in the past and they worked great. Unless the tank is damaged, there's no reason to suspect bad seals. A leak in any water system that looks like that is an indication of a bad sealant or sealing job. I work in a maintenance field so, yes, i can tell.

Omg exactly, they also want to prove my post on their Facebook page LOL. People are telling me it's my fault but I'm not trying to slander them just raise awareness and you can see how often it is with these tanks.

At first I couldn't tell if this was sarcasm because no one said not to buy a red sea tank but it is something people need to look out for. Thank you for your input.

Really sorry for your bad experience OP but like buying a used car, sometimes you just don't know how well it was maintained.

Lot of Red Sea bashing here and I have to wonder why they are the leading manufacturer of reef tanks world wide if their product is so bad. Things that make you go hhhmmmmm....

Yeah I hear you, I also heard a lot of things have changed with them. I got them because of their great reputation. I think they are riding on older times because they are not standing behind their product or allowing anything about this to be posted even though it's a known problem. They actually had a recall on the 750 where they added a brace. The seal doesn't even sit on the stand so it's no wonder it blew.

Ouch yeah I won't do a big tank until I can have that setup

Sad, but its entirely avoidable.

I shelved my reef dreams for a long time until I could buy a house instead of putting a big tank in a flat.

Sometimes you gotta do whats reasonable, a glass tank with a lot of water is a no-no in a flat imo. Regardless of Red Sea or not it couldve been a kid throwing a toy or another accident.

Even in my own house I only got a couple of 10G tanks and even these ones are in the office area with nothing below it and the walls to the adjoining rooms are DPCd up to 20cm.

Yeah you're right won't do it again -_-
