Rimless regrets?

I prefer a euro-brace myself.
I wanted a rimless but my builder said no for the size and did 'euro-braces' (new term for me). Then I rimmed it to match the stand. It's nice. It gives a great mounting for the Redsea mesh cover to keep the fish out of the garden.

Anyone have regrets with rimless? Having a 90G glass with black top rim myself, I already have hard enough time not spashing with cleaner magnet and keeping that top line clean. I kept a IM20 for a couple years and found it hard to keep that water line aesthetically pleasing.

I hate rimless tanks. Unfortunately couldn't pass up a deal from someone in a local reef club on a PA130. Had a canopy built for this one because I hate light spillage and seeing the water line. But probably won't help much with splashing.
The sad part about this is that LEDs are super controllable - so its not hard to build LED fixtures that are more focused and have less light spill - but they don't sell well because they don't look as bright. Because light spill is a lot of what you see.

I always had rimmed tanks until I purchased a new IM 25 lagoon a few years ago. I loved the sleek look of it but one corner eventually failed after 13 months. I think picked up a used but very clean Red Sea nano which was find for about a year and then I started to see droplets of water on the right side seam.

I am very careful when cleaning the glass so I don't feel that I had anything to make those 2 tanks fail but I also understand that my experience might not be common. I think rimless tanks look cool although that area above the water line did start to bother me after a while.

I'm stepping back in time for my current build and have chosen a traditional rimmed tank. It was a little underwhelming when I picked it up at the shop but I could not stand the idea of having a 3rd rimless tank possibly fail.

I also have no issues with rimless. Magic eraser and the occasional razor blade keeps the water line clean. I have an acrylic/screen top to prevent jumping.

I was wondering if a Magic Eraser was safe to use in a reef tank. I don't really know what is in those, I thought some sort of solid soap that slowly dissolves as it gets used. Have you found otherwise or found it to be reef safe?

Yes, they are totally safe as long as you get the original. They are completely harmless and are just melamine foam. They have been in use for years in reef tanks with no issues. I use them to clean my inside glass weekly.

Nice Tank. I am planning on another tank. Do you mind sharing who built your tank with contact info. Thank you.

My tank was built by a guy who works through a store called “Fish Doctors” in Ypsilanti, Michigan. I’m not sure of the builder’s name or if you can contact him directly, but he’s located around the Detroit area.

I don’t have any regrets getting my tank from him, but I’m not sure if I’d go that route again. The price came in about the same as if would have gone with customaquariums.com and I didn’t have to deal with freight shipping. Some of the seams done with black silicone could have been a little neater and I don’t recall if I was told that there was going to be a black plastic frame on the bottom, but it’s there. It’s not hugely visible, as it is black and the top of my stand is black as are the seams.

The tank seems plenty strong enough and I don’t doubt its long term integrity.

It’s also built with 1/2” standard glass.

My next tank will be acquired in the next 5-9 years as it will be a central feature of my dream house that I’m planning on building when my kids graduate high school. I’ll go with a much more premium building for that one.

As for the tank itself, it’s 115 gallons and setup like a peninsula. It measures 36” long x 26” wide x 28” tall. In terms of dimensions, I only wish I would have gone 30” wide. It would have made aquascaping and planning for coral growth that much easier. I love the height of the tank. That and the height of the stand worked as perfectly as I had hoped to create a perfect viewpoint from my found and loveseat.

Great thread, as someone who was thinking about upgrading to a rimless this is all great information.

I’ve built a fresh nano planted tank using this Landen Rimless. I will definitely be purchasing a Landen tank for all future purchases. After having a replacement tank for nearly 10 months, I can say with confidence this is a really nice set-up. I love the look of this tank so much that I actually made room for it on my desk in my home office. :)
