Rock snot

Last waterchange I scrubbed and I think that made it spread. It's on the walls and powerheads now. Tomorrow is water change day. I'll try scrubbing outside of the tank and hitting the rock with peroxide.

Do you burn candles or essential oils or anything like that? Use febreeze or air fresheners? Lysol spray?

Could it be dinos? Doesn’t look like it from the pictures but the way you describe it sounds exactly like what I experienced in my tank when I had my dinos outbreak. I had a white film over all my rocks. Eventually that went away and I got a bad dinos outbreak.

Have you tested your phosphate and nitrate levels?

Yes I was going to post last night after work but I was tired and fell asleep on the couch. I took the rocks out with my waterchange on Sunday. I cleaned as much as I could off with a toothbrush and then hit it with peroxide. I cleaned the slime off of everything in the tank and let it settle while cleaning the rocks and the sucked as much as out of the sand as possible. So far it seems to have worked. I dont use essential oils or air fresheners. My wife burns candles sometimes 2 rooms down but the door is always closed to the room with the tank. I've never had dinos so I'm not sure if that's what it is. I only have a cheap phosphate test kit and I struggle to tell what color it is. I'm pretty sure it wasn't 0 but can't promise. I should test again and have my wife look. I'm crossing my fingers it doesn't come back.

I had to shut down my tank from this monster so I'm glad you're finding some relief. I wish I'd tried peroxide because I realized in hindsight what a powerful tool it is. I saw people comment about aerosols because that causes "white slime algae" but I don't think that's what this is.

Please keep us updated on your progress!

Well dang...I tried paging @brandon429 since he is so well versed in battling algae. I don’t think this is an algae but I could be wrong... hopefully he has some information

@reeferfoxx

i forget the name of this, it’s what you had. I might forget a genus due to not enough ginseng in diet, but I don’t forget a pic of an invader

not dinos it’s a periphyton variant as soon as I have coffee the ID machinery w fire up. It is a pure requisite hitchhiker and not a parameter cause whatsoever.

right when I’m in the shower bam, it will be identified. Maybe I should go see a doctor I think not being able to ID a former nemesis face to face is not a good sign. Or it means the 90s were rough on me and it’s catching up

Chrysophytes for the love of Pete

now we can search her thread key terms!! I’m still going to the doctor for the 4 min delay what the heck

Its actually a fungal mycelium which is why the coral are affected. Better known as endolithic fungi, it is often assumed as a sponge in which it is actually one that can penetrate calcareous substrates formed by living organisms thereby causing bioerosion and contribute loss to many host animals in marine systems. It attacks organisms, essential algae and enzymes leading to degradation of coral mucus giving it that sponge appearance.

I am about half way through reeferfox thread. Thanks for the link.

What are your water parameters? I'm particularly curious about Nitrates and Phosphates.
I only have api test kits for nitrate and phosphate and I am not very good at reading them. My not so lfs is 2 hours north. I have seen the Hannah salinity checker on their shelf so I may drive up and see if they have the nitrate and phosphate checker.

And forgot to ask... what kind of rocks do you have in your tank?

I have pukani. This is my first tank. When I started it I built a giant pile of rubble. When I realized it wasn't the best for flow I took the rocks in there now out. When I had a bad colonial hydroid infestation I reset the tank changing the sand removing the the left over rock and replacing it the two pieces I removed.

You can cover with coral putty, Some large angels will feed on it or you can use exacto hobby knife and cut /shave it away

If I covered it with coral putty my entire tank would need covered :D. It comes off very easy. A swipe of a tooth brush and it is everywhere.
