I am on well water in the midwest. We have very hard water. My question is a rodi water unit worth it or not? The rodi unit and a water station times takes up some space. Also with the use of a algae turf scrubber I know the algae will absorb most of my metals and such. What would you guys do? Thanks in advance.

I think rodi is worth it. I live in Hawaii and tap water is pretty clean but I still use rodi. TDS reading before filtering is only 3 ppm

it depends on what your putting in your tank. My tanks are full of corals and fish I bend over backwards for so starting with RODI helps with troubleshooting, eliminates more than a few what ifs, and now a days it’s super cheap to make it happen. I’m in an area that has rather good TDS out of the tap 10-15 ppm I couldn’t fathom not using RODI but that’s because I couldn’t fathom loosing what’s in my tanks. If I was casual about it, idk, I might be a bit less pro RODI but it’s one thing I couldn’t do no matter what my perceived quality of the origin water was.

Given that water is the biggest element of your tank and the success of everything depends on it, I think making your own RODI is well worth it. You have complete control over the basic water you are using to make saltwater for your tank.

What‘s your plan if you don’t make your own RODI?

What I have read on the algae turf scrubbers ability to remove solids and such I wasn't sure if I could get by without rodi. From the sounds of it I need to invest in one.

You shouldn't have a reef tank or even a saltwater tank without one. The problems it eliminates, from the overall look of the tank to the health of everything is dependent on clean water. Step 1. Rodi. First thing I bought before I spent the rest of my budget on the tank.

Does your turf scrubber remove chlorine, and chloramines?

So to answer your question. Yes. You will have a healthier tank. However it would be fun to set up a twenty gal for a science experiment and just use your well water on it.

On a side note. Some people degas their ro water for 24 hours then run it through the DI. This means in a brute can with a power head, then pumped through the DI. This is due to co2 depleating the DI.

Never heard that before...would you say the saving on Di is worth the extra effort? Di is not that expensive really.
