Rodi worth it?

With how much money being spent on everything else and the cost of livestock why wouldn't you spend the little extra for RO/DI? Maybe you'll be OK without. Maybe after a year the stuff in it catches up and crash the tank. I'm not flipping that coin..

For you, 100% worth it. Hard water isnt good for reefs. Even if you use water conditioner. I have to, but I have very little elements, and I have a private well at my house, so I do not share element rich water.
Its also not necessarily about the algae, it also has to do with the elements in the water, the health of the fish/inverts/corals, and the bacteria in the water. I've done great with my 20g on tap water, but when I finish my schooling I will be getting a bigger tank, and DEFINITELY using RO/DI.
You could also just buy saltwater from your LFS, but that may end up being quite pricey in the end. But I know some people do.

I forgot the most important part of the degas. It’s if your on well water and have higher co2 in the water. I’m on city so I don’t do this. Sorry I spaced on including that in my other reply.

I ran a tank without one on well water fine but only had that tank for a year, had to move. Cant speak long term

I have that same RODI system. Adding a pressure pump to a RODI system makes it work more efficiently. The BRS 5 stage RODI system has a pressure gauge on the unit. If your incoming water pressure level is low, you may want to consider a pressure pump as well.

Absolutely, probably the most important item you can buy.

I run two powerful ATS, rarely do water changes but my top up water has to be RODI.

We are not keeping fish or corals, we are keeping water!;)

I am on well water in the midwest. We have very hard water. My question is a rodi water unit worth it or not? The rodi unit and a water station times takes up some space. Also with the use of a algae turf scrubber I know the algae will absorb most of my metals and such. What would you guys do? Thanks in advance.
Think of RO/DI water as a blank canvas. You may have decent water out of the well or municipal supply, but RO/DI gives you complete control over the chemistry of the water you're putting in the tank. You are starting with pure water and you choose exactly which salts and other additives you want to use to complete your mix. When necessary, you can adjust various water parameters with greater confidence and accuracy, and a more complete knowledge of your water make up could serve as a useful diagnostic tool in the future. And, you never really know what might be in your water that standard water testing might miss, but that could nonetheless have a detrimental effect on your animals.

Never heard that before...would you say the saving on Di is worth the extra effort? Di is not that expensive really.
100% worth it if you live in certain locations and have a more than a small tank. I thought DI wasn't that expensive until I had to start swapping it out every 75-100 gallons. I started de-gassing my water for 24hrs. After ~100 gallons I still have not seen any of the resin change color.

at the risk of sounding like a complete bum, I literally bought one bc when I first filled my tank up I didn't want to lug 29 gallons of water home from the LFS. I only have to change like 2 gals a week, which I'd have been fine with. but I thought about all those steps and I got on Amazon LMBO!! I'm glad I did though bc it was times when being able to have access to water immediately was a lifesaver. my tap comes out at about 188. I bought a 4-stage snap on one from AqauticLife for like $130 and TDS comes out at 0. since i use so little I may not have 2 replace any canisters for 1-2 years. Plus its small but makes 100 gals a day, AND it's portable. all i did was buy a faucet adapter. I make about 2 gallons an hour, but that could be boosted with a booster. since i only need 2-4 gals at a time I won't even bother with that... that initial fill up alone was a fourth of what I paid. you're going to be so mad if you fill up your tank with store bought RO water and then after half a year of water changes do the math and realize you just spent your RODI money on half a years worth of RO water.

It's like insurance (car, life, fire, medical, etc.).

You may not need it and then might look back at it as a waste of money.

But if you do discover you need it, it's too late.

ok another question people put it in laundry rooms. my laundry has laundry detergent and other chemicals . i know they are in the air bc i can smell. them how is that safe?

Get one and you'll wonder why it took you so long to do it. Just for the convivence, its a must have for any level of Reef husbandry. Many choices of affordable, easy to service units out there. Go the extra mile and add the DI unit for sure. And makes great drinking water as well.

Odors like fragrances are not usually a concern. They are small amounts and will likely just be eaten by bacteria.

Dusty particulates carry a lot more material and different things than odors do, so cover any storage containers.
