Sharing BRSTV’s video!

Just bear in mind that BRS is a company that wants to sell things. It's not an unbiased entity like Consumer Reports, nor are they scientists.
You can buy copepods anywhere. You can buy hydrogen peroxide and lugols from the grocery store.

The entire video Randy busts the guy from Algae Barns balls. I am just missing the selling points here.

Maybe some product placement with the RedSea tanks, maybe Algae Barn. If this video is a giant advertisement then please more of this.

Moral of the story…. Back in the mid 90’s, I know I’m old, I started tanks with real live rock plucked from the ocean sold at the lfs. I also used saltwater that was pumped from the ocean and sold at the lfs. Both were cheap and abundant at the time. Over 20 years, no pests, no tank crashes, no real ugly stages, some would just call it luck. My first new tank, with over 20 years under my belt, Marco rock, bare bottom, ulns….. let me tell you, I’ve had every problem known in the universe with this thing for the first two years! Three years in and it’s finally stable and taking off, but now I’ve lost most my vision so I can’t enjoy it! I think it’s always been safe to say that real live rock is the way to go, or cooking it…. Funny about that is I remember the rc days of people actually cooking or boiling rock! I don’t think the seeding of a dry rock tank with a bio brick from someone else’s sump is necessarily bad, but I haven’t seen it jump start a tank as much as was touted. I also remember purple up and that was the best way to start coralline, we’ll I guess not. I also remember live sand being the best way to start a tank…. Guess not, a raw shrimp the best way to start a tank…. Guess not, there’s too many to list and all were on certain video series from certain vendors…and all touted as science
Yeah we really need a better term than to cook rock! Ugh!

Just use "real" live rock if at all possible. I really, really doubt anyone is going to find a much better way to kickstart a tank. I know it can be pricey but with all the headaches of the so called "ugly stage" and bottles of supplements you're gonna end up using from starting with all dry rock in an attempt to get close to the real deal, it's well worth the money.

Ryan busting his chops was so entertaining lol!

The number of jars of copepods needed to bring a tank back was pretty illuminating also.
I was curious to see what would have happened had they not siphoned the pods excrement. I can’t see, so I couldn’t watch this video but I listened and it sounded like it was an astronomical amount left behind when they were done eradicating the issue.

Was this an infomercial for algae barn?
Put an aptasia eating file fish in your tank before you have aptasia.....So what does the fish eat in the meantime.

The pictures showed quite a lot of debris. I can see why they removed it. It would be a ton of nutrients released.

It looked like a yard full of grass if you didn't use a bag on your mower. I can totally see why the removed it it was pretty extensive.

They eat normal fish foods too, actually they are pigs.

Yeah, it sounded like. I was curious if there was a bacteria that might further break it down. I understand the nutrient spike, it’s the whole everything in the food chain experiment. I know they had to stop somewhere though before going quantum

Mine eats absolutely everything! Everything but Aiptasia! Ha
I think the “Aiptasia eating” part is overblown with filefish. I have now twice seen my filefish “eradicating” them, in different settings. However just a couple days after removal from the system, the exact same Aiptasia, fully formed, same locations and apparently damage free, reappear. I think filefish must be bullying them to death.

Amazing what this fourm has turned into...instead of appreciating a great presentation that either taught someone all new stuff or confirmed what some already knew, it is a major bash session all because the info came from someone you hate.

If Ryan came out tomorrow and said Jebao pumps are rock solid and Viparspectra lights are the best, half of you would sell them because "Ryan must be making money off my already owned equipment."

Mine will nip them and spit them out, making them spread faster. I hate him! Haha You had one job……one job

I guess we all see things differently. I thought there were varying opinions within the thread. If we all think the same, dress the same, act the same, it’s no life at all. I did make comment that I appreciate everything Ryan has done and shined a brighter light on the hobby than anyone, yet still question things due to prior experience with quote science

From my experience in a previous tank, coral. All of it. Also sometimes not the aiptasia, lol.

Watch their videos and interviews. They don't even know or understand how what they are selling works. It is pretty embarrassing. Apply that to the price point compared to normal sample DNA sequencing and they are providing multiple sequences for a fraction of the cost out of an apartment... it is pretty self explanatory.
How much do they charge?

My simple gripe is that the video in question comes off as a lot of product placement and outright shilling.

If that what it is so be it, but lets not disguise it as a educational message.

I do agree BRS does put out some good, but there is a lot of mixed messages being put out as well. There is more than one way to skin a cat in the reefing game

Edit: Folks tend to take the BRS methods as gospel, they usually end up here questioning why it didn't work for them as it worked for the guys in the video.
