Sharing BRSTV’s video!

You can buy copepods anywhere. You can buy hydrogen peroxide and lugols from the grocery store.

The entire video Randy busts the guy from Algae Barns balls. I am just missing the selling points here.

Maybe some product placement with the RedSea tanks, maybe Algae Barn. If this video is a giant advertisement then please more of this.

I was commenting on their videos in general, not on this specific video.

My simple gripe is that the video in question comes off as a lot of product placement and outright shilling.

If that what it is so be it, but lets not disguise it as a educational message.

I do agree BRS does put out some good, but there is a lot of mixed messages being put out as well. There is more than one way to skin a cat in the reefing game

Edit: Folks tend to take the BRS methods as gospel, they usually end up here questioning why it didn't work for them as it worked for the guys in the video.

What were they shilling?

Red Sea tanks? Dry rock? AlgaeBarn pods? Aquaforest Life source or whatever it's called? Ocean Direct sand?

All products they carry and products you can buy from someone else including Amazon if one wishes.

There wasn't a single proprietary, hidden ingredient item that I can recall.

AlgaeBarn? They already sell their stuff and have a relationship. Seems logical enough.

AF Life Source? When these experiments started, BRS didn't even carry 99% of the AF stuff. The distribution agreement came much later.

Ocean Direct sand? Again, they carry it. Logical to test it. Buy from Amazon for cheaper.

To be a pushing sales video you need to be the only seller? Herb chambers Honda video commercials push Hondas, but you can buy them elsewhere.

I’m just concerned that many people equate what they see in BRS videos to what they might read in articles by scientists or aquarists that don’t sell anything.

I was one of those folks. Previous videos have been presented in a way that even influenced a seasoned vet into thinking there are better, scientifically proven, ways to go about reefing. Especially when going more into the sps dominated world. I have a bitter taste in my mouth from several different things, but mainly the hidden behind the scenes failures they had and didn’t share along the way. Although I’ve been told if you were on someone’s personal Facebook page, you got the scoop. There also have been honest mistakes that never get corrected. Well, they do, eventually in another two hour year end video that if you blinked you missed it.

Amazing what this fourm has turned into...instead of appreciating a great presentation that either taught someone all new stuff or confirmed what some already knew, it is a major bash session all because the info came from someone you hate.

If Ryan came out tomorrow and said Jebao pumps are rock solid and Viparspectra lights are the best, half of you would sell them because "Ryan must be making money off my already owned equipment."
My thoughts exactly. This guy and his company have put out more education on reefing than any other, but it seems like every time he opens his mouth there is someone complaining he's trying to sell stuff. He's way more knowledgeable and intelligent than most on the forum.

…and they do. I did. Some are prefaced with quote this is an experiment and we test on our tanks so you don’t have to. While others are presented, wether intentional or not, as scientifically proven fact. It can be hard to discern, and when you fail, you become a sceptic and cynic

Interesting thoughts. They are hobbyists sharing their knowledge like many other YouTube channels in the age of YouTube. Yes there’s lots of science to this hobby (i.e. nitrogen cycle, trace elements, etc.) but I think it’s more about personal experiences and finding what works for you because it’s not one size fits all different things equal success. It’s not like baking where you have to be exact or you mess your recipe up lol. I know when I was first starting I watched their videos and learned so much. Their customer service hotline is also amazing and they are very knowledgeable and I definitely called them one too many times. And I love their social media person lol we regularly message. But again I’m a different generation (Gen Z the social media age) than most people on here and have not been in this hobby for 30 plus years before the internet.

THIS 1000%!! I didn’t think my thread would become a large discussion/argument.

And so the age old question rears it's ugly head ... who pays for the knowledge?

Does the oil company paying for the study influence the study or do they influence by choosing a study that has good odds to support them? Does it matter if we know the source of the funding?

Where are the R&D departments of yore?

Universities are about ready to find out about the market equation. Because some aren't seeing their unbiasedness any more. Maybe it's a good thing.

Is that a bad thing? To discuss, question, and share differing opinions? I find more issue with confirmation bias fishing. I welcome others opinions, good, bad, indifferent. I don’t have to agree with everything, no one does, I’d rather they didn’t. Not much is gained when everyone closes their mind.
edit. I don’t agree with everything put out by brs, but I do watch/listen to every single one. Not to find error, or say he’s wrong, it’s to open my mind. They are thought provoking for sure, which I think is great! I just don’t accept everything as factual or proven science from go. I’ll dig into a bit and form my opinion.

Not necessarily but I didn’t realize this is what so many of you thought. Read my recent post.

They do, without a doubt have tremendous customer support in my experience. I wish the hold times were better but that’s as it’s very difficult for me to order online as I’m new to being mostly blind and still learning the ins and outs of screen readers and website accessibility. So I’m calling to just place an order, not for advice, but the wait is the same either way.

Shill: an accomplice of a hawker, gambler, or swindler who acts as an enthusiastic customer to entice or encourage others

Maybe Ryan falls into that category for some. I've never seen him pretend to be a customer when he wasn't.

The same can not be said for multiple other popular companies in this industry. The true shillers.

I wish some of those scientists would put out entertaining videos for me to watch. I also wish some of them even had a tank at one point or could show serious success with their scientific approach to keeping an aquarium
