Smoking or vapeing round tank?

I spoke to my neighbor who is a heart/lung specialist, but not a reefer or marine biologist. I also showed him this thread. He said that there has been research done on the effects second hand smoke has on animals in the home, and there is a correlation between higher incidents of issues with household pets, in a home where someone is smoking.

I'm not sure how that directly relates to a reef tank, but he was of the opinion that the smoke from cigarettes is toxic, and that at some level, over time, it would only make sense that it enters a fish tank.

His other comment was that some of the folks posting here were making an effort to not smoke near their tank, for fear of harming it. he found this ironic, that a smoker is more worried about a replaceable fish tank, than their non replaceable human life. He was adamant that smoking and vaping is not safe, and encourages all of you to quit. (Just repeating his comments, don't flame me guys)

There's even studies that show third hand smoke is likely harmful. The residue left on objects like car interiors, furniture, etc., is suspected to be harmful.

I quit over 10 years ago, wish I would have never started :). Edit to add I looked soooooooo cool lunging down Camels.

It’s kalkwasser officer I swear!

You know, some murderes did use lime/calcium hydroxide on bodies to help keep smell down/decompose.

So having a bunch a powered lime isn't exactly the most innocent looking thing either.

No offense to your friend. Im sure he's very knowledgeable. But he is a specialist removed from taking care of pts on a daily basis. No-one says vaping is safe, its a matter of harm reduction. His job is to tell the pt not to smoke and see him in 6 months, I get stuck doing the follow up and actually trying to get the person to improve their health. In an ideal world, everyone I tell to stop smoking would stop smoking. But that never happens. Unfortunately.

I don't smoke or vape but my wife smokes. Always wondered if it effected the tank. Apparently not.
I read about Febreeze and asked her not to spray it anywhere at home.

I too am a vaper and have wondered the same. I would imagine very small quantities of the vape juice does indeed enter the water column, Likely immeasurable and of no concern to any of the livestock and considering how often water changes occur are unlikely to ever be in concentrations high enough too. That said, ask yourself is it better for our health to vape or not too vape?

I cant imagine trace amounts of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin being terribly detrimental to a reef. Flavor additives and nicotine maybe of a concern though.

My fiance and I both smoke in the house. I also use a chimnea with warming oil in the same room as my tanks. It's on the other side of the room, but still... Have for years. I've never had any issues from it.

When going fishing we call a certain device "the fish whistle"

That's as much as I'm willing to say
I know what a fish whistle is, grew up in the country, I saw Fish and Wildlife even use one for lake fish population profiles.

If you are able to overcome the nicotine addiction and quit vaping, I would. Even if you do it in another room, it still goes through your home.

I vape around mine all the time and haven’t had any ill effects
Me too and my wife burns Yankee Candles all the time. The HVAC carries it throughout the house. Candles are never in the room with the tank. No problems ever. That doesn't mean it isn't doing something over time, I just haven't seen how long that takes. Maybe that is one of the reasons for mystery tank crashes. I'm about ready to quit the vape, too much aggravation and people dying and all.

Yeah, that's what it is, it's like a dog whistle, but for fish!

I don't want to be a hypocrite, however. I do have air fresheners in my bathrooms and use lysol, etc. when cleaning. That gets into the air too.

I had a client crash her tank by using lysol quick wipes, she had just finished wiping down her kitchen counters, she walked by the tank and noticed a coral had fallen, without thinking she reached in and poof! over half the coral died.

 I try to make certain that I don't have chemicals on my hands or use them on the tank -- but in the air?! Wow. Good to know. Thanks.

We have an older home and 7 small hairy dogs, the house seems to produce dust at a tremendous rate and the dogs shed more airborne hair than they can possibly have. I have actually pulled small wads of hair from pump shaft bearings. I have to remove hair from the tanks webbing cover. I figure in 5 years my tank crash will be due to the 6 inches of hair and dust in the display.

been hotboxing the fish tank room for years and never seen an issue. blaze n gaze!

Ever seen the ceilings of a smoker? ...case solved :)
Years ago when smoking was still acceptable at work anywhere, I decided to clean the office I shared with a coworker. I used Formula 409 on the walls (fiberglass panels with a textured finish), the brown goo that ran down those walls was amazing. The only problem was you almost had to wear sunglasses to stay in the room. Bright flourescent overhead lighting. The places were called the Delta Gathering Station and Venice Stabilizer Plant. If you lived in or worked in the oilfield in lower Plaquemines Parish, you know where I'm talking about.☠
