I don’t see any disco effect at all with my blue. It’s mounted with the mounting arm. Looks super smooth to me with just “normal” shimmer from the water movement.

To be honest the Hydras are way more of a directional light, where as the Radions seem like they were designed like t5's. Hydras have to be mounted this high to achieve some kind of reasonable spread that most corals would like. Besides you probably had to buy more of them to compensate for the crazy directionality of the hydras.

Only bought 3 and the speed is pretty awesome. I'm sure the g5 would give more even coverage

What would scare me about the g5 is the mounting height. 8in off the water to a little to close for comfort. I bought 4 hydra 64hd and at 12in my getting awesome results.

This is only with 3 over the 180g.

They are probably recommending 8” off the water because they got the best looking numbers with it hung that high. I have never seen an amazing tank with hard corals that hangs their lights at 8”. Maybe some nice softy tanks can get away with it.

The blue g5 defiantly does not have enough white bulbs for me to ever enjoy it. Not sure how other acropora keepers feel but I have not seen a tank lit with mostly blues that I like. There are always certain colors that blues won’t show from what I have seen. Looking forward to seeing some long term results with the blue fixture.

4 x Gen 5 Blues hanging over a 72"x30" 200 gal Tank. 14" off water line. 500 par on top level were SPS are. If I turn up to 100% I easily get 700 par. My corals are growing and poping color just fine. And pics dont do justice. They look way too blue in pics, in reality, they look more like 14k phoenix.

My g5 exactly mimics my t5s color exactly. 2 blue+ and 2 coral+.
Shimmer is completely different. The disco effect is in the wall but not in the tank. Shimmer is very small particles bouncing of the sand. Compared to say the larger glares u get from a kessil, the look is very different.

How do you view the tank? It hurts my eyes just looking at the picture.

I purposely aimed up so that the lights were in frame. My tank is pretty short overall. Lights are forehead-level high

So I am thinking of upgrading to the G5's from the G4 Pros. Any suggestions on Blue or Pro? Some people say if you have Pros stay with Pros but others say if you are running AB+ go with the Blues. I'm really having difficulty deciding which ones. Any advice would be appreciated.

G5 Pro's... except for the mounts 5 stars. I haven't seen the Blues in action but trust me the Pro's are plenty blue on AB+ with a lot more spectrum options. Very subtle shimmer less than MH. As I remodel this tank and get rid of most of the nem's and grow out some stuff I may possibly need a 4th but each covers 24x24x27 perfectly right now with no shadows except where there should be.

BTW less shimmer than Kessil A360WE. I started with 3 and had to add two more to deal with shadowing and disco/shimmer that just about gave me vertigo.

I came from probably the best light you can own (8 bulb ATI Hybrid) and I’m glad I upgraded. Great coverage, color blending and color. The G5’s mimic the LED/ T5 look but obviously with shading.
Worth the upgrade from G4? Yes.
Although G4/T5 is better than a G5 by itself.
