Success with Atlantic blue tang

I have one I got when he was only 1 inch. I do not feed nori to any of my tangs. I feed strictly spurlina brine and pe mysis. Mainly pe mysis. He’s very healthy and starting to get his adult coloration. Super cool fish, very accepting of other tangs and any new tank inhabitants. I would highly recommend Atlantic blues.

We frequent the Keys and see these fish all over the reefs. We wanted a fish from the area we visit... Our DT is a 125g. If he grows too large, I'll re-home him with a friend with a 700g DT.
I think once everything settles for a while in my 125 I'll grab another from divers den and hope for a better experience.

I have one that I got at 1”. Was skiddish when small now is super agressive. Chased everything I had even 10” Sohal. The Sohal fights back the blue gets injured and then goes back for more is always beaten up! Even goes up against 10” Koran! This is a 300g, 8’ tank. I wouldn’t get another. Much preferred my powderblue or regal tang. The Caribbean blue just never settles down always fighting another fish and not just the tangs. Well if you get one good luck and hope yours turns out better than mine.

This tank is on hold as I think slmethsom is wrong with it. We will see what happens once it settles out.

Well good luck. Hope you figure out what is wrong with your tank. I have a fish only tank 300gal that is in dispare right now. We are trying everything we can not to loose our 12+ year old fish. We upgraded for them to larger tank and nothing has gone right. :( but best wishes to you.

I swear this tank is cursed. Got it started, lost a ton of fish in qt, a few made it, (this was the first time I did qt) lost those fish to a temp controller failure. Now fish keep dropping like flies. It's a fun game of who's going to be dead today.... My reef tanks are fine, fowlr seems cursed....

Mine passed away. He had Ich the whole time. It’s part of the power blue tang family. I believe they are Ich magnets. I would not get one again.

I'm starting to wonder if that might of been the issue. Seemed healthy, should of qt'd I'm.considering a trio of purples instead of other tangs.

Mine too! Reefs are great- knock on wood. Have 300gal reef and 93 cube reef both good. But 300gal fish only is a disaster. I’ve lost three fish. All fin rot. But had ammonia and nitrite spikes, and ick. And who knows what else. All the fish look sick. I test water daily and change water like every three days and sometimes emergent changes. Have 50gal fixed all the time now. Has been up since the weekend after thanksgiving. Was a tank transfer from 180 to 300. :(
Hope yours turns out. Did you read fourfordfamily’s thread on current diseases and quarantine. Maybe reach out to him he’s been super helpful to me. Hotrocks too. They are quarantining lots of fish now for huge system. May be able to help you also. Sorry for your troubles.
Where are you getting your fish from if I might ask? And what state are you in?
I’m in Wi and only get my fish fro
One LFS. Has been fine for years and now he is getting disease too. He uses copper in store and other meds to treat sick fish as they come to him. So sad all fish we have all lost. This use to be easier. And I thought fish only was easier but it’s not. What kinds of fish are you doing in your fish only tank?

I moved the Caribbean blue from my 300 reef that has had ick in the past so maybe that’s why I got ick in my new tank. I thought it came from the new puffer but who knows!
Here’s a picture of mine in the fish only tank. It changes color and is pale sometimes. Was yellow for over two years and recently turned blue about a year ago. I’ve had the blue for over 4 yrs.

I've been using the same lfs for everything for a long time. usually I won't buy a fish if it hasn't been there for at least 4 to 5 days. This round of broke my rule, and it likely bit me.

My goal was something like this

Maroon

2 wrasse

Blue Tang.

Tang

Tang

Emperor angel /Blueface angel

Rabbit fish

Butterfly

School of chromis

Another rabbit?

Coral beauty

Starry blenny

Hawkfish

Nice emperor!! Also on the list for when we upgrade.

I like the list! Good choices! We have the emperor got as a juvenile watched it change, majestic, have a juvenile queen very small in with them and also the 12+yr old Koran! The Koran is agressive but tolerates the others. Next I would do a scribble and regal angel but both are a little timid for my Koran. We have a beautiful annularis in the reef. I think that’s actually my favorite angel! We have a Fox with this group too. Had three triggers but lost one. Last week. Three tangs, 4 angels, tusk in quarantine for pop eye and 2 puffers. All large fish except the baby queen angel. Thank you!
I hope you get yours turned around.

I'm waiting it out before I rush anything to see what's next the goal is to get all the juviniles in there, and then upgrade to the 240, maybe add another Tang at that point.

Sound like a good plan! I wish you the best. And hope it turns around for you. Sorry about your losses. Have a good night.

Our Atlantic Blue Tang has been in our display (125g) for a week now. I'm not sure we could feed him with a dump truck and shovel. COMPLETELY different fish in the display than QT. He immediately established himself as the "boss" -- expected with a group of green chromis and lyretail anthias. He's been a model citizen thus far... just HUNGRY. He eats 1-2 full sheets of nori everyday and happily eats frozen mysis, Reef Frenzy, & Rods.

I have one currently in the 300G. It stayed in my sump for a good three months because I wanted to add it last with all the other tangs. There was some chasing from time to time but nothing really serious. I feed a lot and I have quite a few angels and tangs so the aggression is spread out. His blue is not very deep so I assume he’s still transitioning.

Could be, but in the wild I've seen them anywhere from baby blue to so dark they almost look black in the same school and the same adult size. Not sure what causes that color discrepancy but maybe one of our tang experts can tell us.
