Sumps

Welcome to R2R! If you're going sumpless, I would recommend an oversized HOB, or even 2. My brother runs a canister filter on his 75 FOWLER, and battles high nitrates all of the time. For me, HOB's are easier to maintain anyway. One thing though. If there's any chance of corals in your future, I would go with a sump from the start. It could save you money, effort and aggravation in the long run. I know there are a lot of people that have successful sumpless reef tanks, but for me, it has made all the difference. Just do your research and keep asking questions before you take the plunge.

It can help. I think they recommend it once a month for maintance or after water changes. It is not a mandatory addition once your tank has cycled. It wont hurt anything.

I use it after every water change. Fish are much happier that way as far as my freshwater anyhow. Lol
