Does anyone know what is in the Trident reagents? I made a really dumb mistake and swallowed a small amount of all 3. I was using an empty mountain dew can for liquid waste while cleaning the cuvette and lines. Brain went on autopilot and I took a good swig from the can.

I think it was mostly water, but did get a bit of a burning sensation in the back of my throat. Please tell me it is harmless so we can laugh hysterically at how dumb this was :grinning-face-with-sweat:

You may want to email them for the SDS. Why would you use a drink container for waste?
It was already sitting in front of me and I didn’t want to get off my rear end to go get a waste container… I’m a professional pharmaceutical scientist and worked in a formulation lab for 10 years, so trust me I’m really kicking myself on this one!

“pharmaceutical scientist of 10 years swallows reagents”

I’d read that cover story

The implication here is that a couple mls of reagents are more toxic than the Mountain Dew that used to be in the can. Not sure if there's evidence for that. ;)

Honestly, I'd look up the SDS -- that's great advice. I'm willing to bet that @Randy Holmes-Farley could list the ingredients pretty readily.

The scary thing about this is that others do it too and you never know who would get ahold of the can. We can all laugh about this, but when it comes down to it, it can be dangerous.

EMERGENCY tag , for real ? call poison control .
A joke , fine ,cool ,but don't tag EM .
I was legitimately concerned and could not find the MSDS. I thought I might get some answers here faster than trying to get ahold of someone at Neptune and didn’t think poison control would know what these reagents were. Yes, I am fine and now it is quite funny, but this really did happen and I really was concerned. Some colorimetric titration reagents are extremely toxic. Formaldehyde and silver nitrate for example.

I couldn’t find the MSDS online. I’m feeling fine an hour later, and less concerned, but I would like to know what is in those bottles for future reference.

Lesson 1: do not put potentially poisonous things, in a food container. Luckily, a child didnt do what you did...
Just sayin

The nurse in me would suggest calling poison control to be safe. I used to work in the Emergency Department, and poison control was always our first line of contact, even before our in-house providers. They'll be able to tell you if you should be concerned and when to seek physical medical attention.

Glad to hear you are ok .

Update: I am fine. @JimWelsh was kind enough to share the SDS and there were no significant toxicities listed. Thanks Jim! I’ll let you all know in a few years if I’ve developed any super powers or extra limbs :grinning-squinting-face:

Also for future reference, there actually are some significant hazards for some of the ingredients in these reagents, but they are diluted to the point that it would take a lot to have serious reaction. Reagent A can cause acid related skin and eye irritation or burn. Reagent B can permanently blind you if in eyes and can be fatal if vaporized and inhaled. Reagent C is pretty safe. It might be carcinogenic in California.

Reagents A and B are quite toxic to aquatic life so be careful around your tanks I suppose.
