What are you opinions on the tv show Tanked?

Good on them for generating interest in the hobby! It is our responsibility as keepers to research how to properly care for and sustain these creatures. While their show is entertainment based, it leaves it to the hobbyist to be responsible. Could they take more time explaining the important items for success? Sure, but I'm not entirely certain how much of the content they have control over, and educational based show may be more appropriate on a different channel.

Bottom line being, in my opinion they bring people into the hobby, the more we have in the hobby the better.

From the shows I have seen they just dump the fish in right away and use a bunch of fake decorations. Feel bad for the fish because it seems they are doomed from the start. Maybe there are some behind the scenes things going on that we dont see. I enjoyed watching it but I was always wondering what happens to the fish in a month.

I agree with you however, they may let the tank cycle and they may educate the customer. We don't know what goes on behind the camera. I hope these people are educated to care for there fish.

Funny, I re read my post as you were posting this and corrected what I said because it may have been to harsh. haha

I didn't think so. Sometime you just have to be harsh. Lol it would be nice to see what they do behind the camera. I know these people spend a lot on there aquariums I wonder if they get maintenance for so long. To me there is nothing more gratifying then designing my tank the way I want it.

Well they have had some tank crashes that have went public so imo they don't do what's needed to have a healthy tank, But I agree with the above its totally up to us hobbiest to do our own research so nobody can blame the show tanked for teaching them wrong ways to setup tanks.

I think I saw one episode where they did a tank in a nail salon.....I didnt think all the fumes in there would be good for any tank.

I wonder if there is any data collected in regards to how many successful reef keepers got their first look into the depth of the hobby from this show though. I bet we would be suprised. Sure the content on the show is less than ethical, businesses buy tanks, those tanks crash. Do we expect businesses to take care of their tanks on the same level that we as hobbyists do? I'll be honest, my tank has become part of my life. It is far beyond just a tank to me, something I care for greatly and on days spend more time with than my lady. I don't think we can use the examples from companies that have a public business tanks that crash. This show is also bringing people into this hobby. People who will do the research, and will take the time and will grow with and from their tanks. I absolutely feel that it is doing more good than harm.
Brett Raymer is not some monster, I mean this guy loves this hobby as much as I do I'm sure of it, he started a business around it. I'm sure if he could speak to the above he would, the businesses let these tanks crash, these guys absolutely do everything they can to direct the clients, why would they not. No one in this hobby wants this hobby to fail. It would be bad form as a show host, a figure in the industry for him to say this and to blame the business (his clients) for improper care. It would look bad on the network as well and who knows what kind of contracts are even in place about him speaking about these jobs after the fact.

But that's my take on it anyway, these guys are bringing people into the hobby.

Watched it a handful of times and it wasn't for me. Seems like it's very heavy on manufactured (and boring) drama and extremely sparse on useful information. Seems like the producers don't believe there's an audience for an informative, mature show about reef keeping, so they've dumbed it down to 98% entertainment and 2% information. It didn't help that I found the cast extremely irritating.

It's cool if it gets people into the hobby, but hopefully they do their research first. I fear it could have a "101 Dalmatians" effect, where a bunch of people saw the movie, went "Awwww," got a dog they knew nothing about, and then tons of dalmatians ended up homeless or in shelters.

I tend to agree what has been said. But do we really know what happens after they set up tank and leave? They do have some Interesting themes but I really feel It Is all about making the dollar. I really wish we had some customers of them that could provide us with some Input. I have heard some negative
things about tanked but I have no evidence. I hope that they are educating their customers how to take care of the precious creatures.

Bingo!! Love the show, they condense it for TV, we have no idea what they do to the tanks, or how long it really takes to set em up.

Love the tanks they build!! FYI it's called EDITING! They take a build that takes weeks to months and cut it up and turn it into an hours worth of entertainment. Ever watch Swamp People, Duck Dynasty or The Walking Dead? Bet some of you love those shows!!! I do!!
Anyone one on you nay sayers could cycle a tank in two weeks. Especially with all the products that are available to us today. Just ask Dr. Tim or is he full of it too? Cured live rock, quality live sand, MB7 or the like and there ya go.
As for fake decorations. Look at where they put the majority of these tanks. High traffic areas! Who has time to care for corals? They give the customers what they want. Isn't that what AMA does?
As for the customers caring for their tanks? Hmmm let's see I'm pretty dang sure they PAY someone to do it for them :) Can't see Betty White doing a water change-lol.

I'm done ranting :) I love the show and what AMA stands for.

Lol! You obviously haven't been up to date with all the animals they have killed for rushing the tanks, They stock to fast and they overstock every tank they build,And yes we can get a tank cycled quicker with good liverock but it's not always as fast as 2 weeks and you don't want my opinion on bacteria in a bottle lol we just won't go there.

I've seen these "Tanked" threads time and time again. These show's are edited and staged to create hype for TV. From what I hear from the reefing "uppers" (The guest speakers that we all respect, scientists that write articles we all gain information from) the guys from ATM are as straight forward and informative as anyone in the industry and try to teach all their clients the best they can. the shows you see are theme tanks and pressed for time to create drama for TV. For the most part these guys build custom FO tanks that are huge and set them up to last long term just like a public aquarium would. The TV channel is what deletes all the pertinant information that teaches the general public about the "cycle" we all know is the basics. That is boring for TV. If you watched the first season and the second you would notice a little bit more information in the second due to so much backlash from us over the lack of basics in the first season. These guys don't deserve to be beat up from us because they are a big enough national company that they are interesting to America.

What I dislike most is the forced drama to make for "exciting" TV. I don't think Americans (not sure what reach this show has around the globe) are nearly as dumb as the producers and Animal Planet seem to think. We are more than happy to be educated while watching TV! Discovery scores big ratings with Blue Planet, Life, Planet Earth, etc, because there is a huge population of people starved for intelligent, mature TV. I'm not saying each episode of Tanked needs to have a 10-minute debate about the benefits of carbon dosing. But I do think the show would find an audience if it spent less time creating "drama" within the ATM staff and, instead, just let the fish, corals, inverts, etc be interesting on their own.

Tanked is to reef keeping as Guy Fieri is to fine cooking, as Paul Junior is to Harley Davidsons, as Spinal Tap to rock and roll, as Morgan David is to fine wine, as Prego is to a fine all-day-long homemade ragu, and so forth and so on. It's a novelty. A semblance. I watch it sometimes, but with distain mostly. LOL
