I've never had a problem with high nitrates since I don't have clams....but I do want clams heme looking into getting rid of nitrates^^^^ holy moly. You sure. That's crazy high.
I am trying to figure out how to run that method and how much is going to cost me.....it's like I need a instruction manual for starting the method.I use the full probiotic method, np pro and bios. I had to take my GFO offline .... pro bios and np pro was enough for me to keep very low numbers. Phos 0 nitrate barely detectable. It takes a couple of weeks for it to start working. Once I was on the pro bios and the np pro it took about 2 weeks for me. Then I say the numbers drop substantially. I had to then take GFO offline and throttle back on the pro bio s and np pro. I'm definitely UNLS now. All is going very well . [emoji4]
If you dont have any issues with high nitrate then why you wish to shift to AF?I've never had a problem with high nitrates since I don't have clams....but I do want clams heme looking into getting rid of nitrates
Y do you have to add to the food?I think you need to rethink changing to AF method. It's not cheap. After your ULNS you will have to dose food for corals.
Seems like you don't have time for all this.
Reduce feeding.
Run pellets. Slowly increasing
Run gfo.
Water changes.
Pick up some used TLF reactors for both pellets and gfo. Mod it for pellets
Just my 02.

I'm setting up a 55 and want to get the method down on that first to get ready for the 125 I'll be setting up at my house which I will then have time for....just want to get ahead of the gameI think you need to rethink changing to AF method. AF is not magic, it will help you reducing your NO3 load but if you dont maintain the system then its not possible for any system to bring it down to 5ppm from 180ppm. You need to feed less and clean it as possibly your sand bed is accumulating alot of debris.I want clams...
AF will not starve but it will keep the nutrient level very low. If you feed your fish regularly then you may skip the food part.Your going to starve your corals. You don't need AF to have clams.
Yeah I feed like every other day. Amd usually is heavy...I mix a lot of food together like pellets, frozen, garlic, selcon, reef roids, fuel...amd for clams you need a ultra low nutrient tank if I recall correctlyAF will not starve but it will keep the nutrient level very low. You feed all those every alternate day in a 40 breeder....now I know your problem....Yeah I feed like every other day. Amd usually is heavy...I mix a lot of food together like pellets, frozen, garlic, selcon, reef roids, fuel...amd for clams you need a ultra low nutrient tank if I recall correctly
What exactly is my problem? You feed all those every alternate day in a 40 breeder....now I know your problem....
That amount of food every alternate day with irregular water change and no sand bed vacuuming results into a huge nitrate build up. Possibly the easiest way to take your nitrate down will be to throw in some chaeto and it will just eat up all your nitrate. What exactly is my problem?
Is AF cheap no but it is also not expensive either.
