Side question if you don't mind. How would an extended travel or vacation work with this? Similar I guess to the other dosing methods. My dogs I can kennel. Fish tank I can't :) Just wondering how one plans for this with any of these systems. I'll have to do some more reading on this system which isn't a bad thing. Maybe it is easy to incorporate especially if soft and lps corals are fine.

I have dosers and ATO to cover me while away. Additionally belonging to a club helps as I have 3 experienced reefers I can contact to check on and feed my tanks while gone as I have multiple systems.

Thanks. So on a simplistic level you do some math to see how long your dosing container / quantity lasts along the lines of ATO water then size accordingly?

measuring over a period of a week would help calculate OR you can turn down dosers to last all week which I do ( Just remember to bring back up upon return). A little of each element dosed into system is better than none at all.

Thanks. Makes sense. Heading back to the start of the thread then will do some more reading. Sounds promising while not holding me hostage to the house. While I normally don't travel this project for work has my all over so just trying to make it easier on my family while I'm gone. Adding food or adding ATO water is one thing, resupplying is another. Especially since I know I don't document worth crap :( Looks promising though :D

Thanks mate.
The mayority of dutch reefers run my way now. Because they love the idea of saving time, resources, environment, money and learning at the same time. Last but not least, they like my results[emoji6].

The majority run your way? As far as I know it is not that popular in the Netherlands and Belgium
On Dutch reefer forums it is not a hype at all!
Some like it, some don't. How does it safe money? Compared to what?

You save quite a bit of $$ on Salt for one. And if you count time as money, no manual labor for WC helps too.

Noobie here. So......If I'm starting out from day one....I mix my regular salt mix (bag) and setup my tank.
From then on I test my water and use the calculator to fill in the missing spots?

I wish someone would do an English video actually describing the calculator. I consider myself pretty smart (mistake?) but when I watch the video I'm like...What?

Just found it on YOUTUBE.

Thanks

Glenn recommends you use his Salt Mix recipe, which is included in the calculator. After that, you test for the major elements (ALK, CA, MG, No3, Po4 etc) once the system is running for a bit. You will not have to dose No3, Po4, right away as it is a new system. Most likely you will have to dose carbon and Po4 remover (FE+) as the system matures. The calculator is built based on his recipes and products, so if you don't have those you will have to make your own. Personally, I just bought several of his products with the exception of Soda Ash, Ca Cholride, MG Sulphate etc that can be sourced domestically from BRS.

I'll give you and example of how I use the calculator:

No3:

On the above line, I measured 0 No3 one particular day. My target value is 2.5 ppm. For my Tank volume (250 liters) I have to dose 4.50 ML to raise the target value to 2.5 ppm.

Po4:

upload_2018-4-15_9-43-37.png

In the line above, I measured Po4 at .024 My target is .04. I need to dose UP TO 1.87 ML daily in a (250 liter) system. *Note* this is a max daily dose as dosing liquid iron can be hard on fish. You have to build up to this dosage to get your fish used to the high dosage of Iron. You measure Po4 weekly to get the value down to your target, in my case .08. Again, this calculator is based on Glenn's products. Others on this board have made their own liquid Po4 remover but as I stated I opted for Glenn's method.

For other elements, Sr, K, Boron, I use ICP tests every 3 months to balance out. The testing for those elements is not frequent and I found it easier to use ICP to balance instead of running my own tests. I've found Sr in particular to be a pain.

I dose Iodine based on the calculator, I do not test for it as it rapidly depletes. I take the maximum dose for my system and drop it in. Calculator:

The above indicates maximum measured (peak) value. The maximum dosage I can use is .20 ML daily on my system. Indicated on this table included in the calculator:

It was a bit trial and error in my experience. I use Glenn's calculator for things like:

Po4, No3 control
Other element control (K, B, Sr,Iodine)

I don't use his calculator for:
Alk, CA, MG, Carbon.

The big three are easy to test and manage, we all try to keep those stable (Alk). For Carbon I use Vinegar, and through trial and error dose to properly manage No3.

Hope this helps,

Tom

Thanks. Are you buying his products off of his website? And when you say you are dosing Vinegar, are you actually 'just' using vinear?

How is the measuring and dosing of all those products (the store site) being done? Are you using beakers/test tubes to measure and then adding to tank? I hope I'm allowed to ask all these beginner questions in the thread.

You can ask any questions you want in this forum. :)

I'm just using milliliter syringes. if you look at the pics in the above post 4.50 = 4.5 ML etc

It all depends on what your specifically dosing and how much. I use small 30ml graduated shot glasses since most of my doses are 5ml or more on my 300 gallon tank. I also have 1000ml graduated cup. For a smaller tank I would suggest using 1 & 5 ml syringes like come in test kits for everything, but ALK, CA & Mag.

I am dosing comparable products easily available in the USA. I am dosing straight house hold vinegar I buy by the gallon at Costco. I only dose 10 ml a day or so currently.

Because there is a own DSR community [emoji6]. So no need to bother the community that favor WC.

The confusion rests with DSR and the tested/trusted Triton method which successful as is carbon dosing, dosing methods and use of various reactors.
These methods all offer some success and I as a former pet store owner and long time hobbyist have always done little to no water changes and maintained mixes of LPS/SPS with little loss of specimens

I don't argue, but just share real data.
I had my fare share of argue in the past on dutch forums.

The methode laid the foundation.
Own Interpretations are free.
Homogeneity is warranted by the source.

So you see, you can fare all course.

Once you know the specific weight of the products you can. also use a precision scale.

I'm intrigued by all of this and it would fall into my category of 'ridiculously tedious hobbies', which I love.
