*** Note: the idea for this thread was shamelessly stolen from @ScottR :p***

So I thought it would be fun and hopefully useful to start a thread for the proper pronunciation of all the different things related to Reef keeping, be it livestock or equipment I hear things pronounced so differently sometimes I struggle to even determine what someone’s actually talking about ;)

For example do you pronounce Chaetomorpha as Kay-toe?

Or Chee-toe? ;Hilarious

Another common one I hear is Acropora, do you pronounce it as A-crop-ora or Ac-ro-pora?

If you would like clarification on pronunciations please ask and hopefully people smarter than me will chime in or if you would just like to correct common mispronunciations that drive you crazy this is your place to vent :)

Kay-toe

Ah-crop-rah

saying Ack-row-poor-rah, just seems so labored, not smooth, where as Ah-crop-rah rolls right off the tongue.

Chay-to or Chee-toe - bruh, I didnt know Frito Lay got in the macroalgea game. lol

Conch = I'll Conk you on the head if you exaggerate the "ch" at the end one more time !! lol

What do you call a tree branch after it looses all of its leaves in winter?
It's a nudibranch ! :oops:

Nudy- bronc ? correct? ?

And yes, this will be a fun thread as long as everyone can keep a sense of humor :p

In the last day I've heard both pronunciations of acropora as well as two pronunciations of Gramma (one that sounds like a slang for grandmother and the other sounds more like gr-ahh-ma).

Polychaete is another word that seems to have an array of pronunciations (and mispronunciations).

Conch = I'll Conk you on the head if you exaggerate the "ch" at the end one more time !! lol

that‘s a great one.. all the employees at my LFS need to be Conk’ed on the head ;Hilarious

I wish I had seen this when I first got in the hobby! Might have saved me some embarrassment!

I still find myself mispronouncing Acropora. Since we call them Acro's for short, it shifts the accent to the A. Makes it hard to emphasize the "crop" when saying the entire word for me.

I love my Fuzzy Kytons.. err... Fuzzy Chitons ;)

Im now living in Texas so im used to a bit of local pronunciations
When I say cheeto they know what I mean
Great thread
Gurene = Green
Boerne = Burn ee
Manor = Main or

Well, you can't imagine how difficult is for someone that doesn't speak English fluently. For me sometimes get me crazy to pronounce the word properly because my first language is Spanish so you can imagine with my broken English :D . Some words I have to hear first a few times in order to memorize the proper pronunciation.

Might have saved me some embarrassment!

In all honesty I started this thread to hopefully save myself some future embarrassment ;) kinda sad that after 3+ decades of reefing I still struggle with the ”lingo”.. I was interacting with a very knowledgeable young lady that works at one of my LFS’s over the weekend and just about every coral we discussed she pronounced differently than I would. I started to correct her but didn’t want to show my ignorance in case she was right ;Hilarious

Choati leopard wrasse - Kodi
Kuiteri leopard wrasse - Coyters (though I’ve heard many others in different languages so who knows)
Miniatus grouper and Achilles tang to name a couple others

Maybe you guys should have an Alexa audio link pronounce the words. Alternatively have someone record an audio file and pronounce the words.
Until you use the same software for directions lol. Schuylkill Ave in Philadelphia might be my favourite.

How do you pronounce Zoas?

I've heard it like the San Diego Zoo and also with the long O, Z-ohs.

Another good one.. I have always used the long “O” when saying Zoa’s however when saying the complete word zoanthids I have heard many people say zoo-anthids.
