The official how do you pronounce it thread

LOL Awesome thread!

I recently learned that chaeto isn't pronounced "cheeto," so that one didn't surprise me.

However, I'm still completely lost on whether I should say conCH or conK when pronouncing conch...and of course that extends to Nudibanchs as well.

Tunze, I think is supposedly pronounced toon-zee rather than tunes or ton-zee, but some of the leaders in the industry disagree on how to say that one, so I figure I'll just pick one and stick with it.

I always assumed I was saying acropora correctly, but now, after this thread, I'm afraid to speak at all...

So I thought it would be fun and hopefully useful to start a thread for the proper pronunciation of all the different things related to Reef keeping, be it livestock or equipment I hear things pronounced so differently sometimes I struggle to even determine what someone’s actually talking about ;)

For example do you pronounce Chaetomorpha as Kay-toe?

Or Chee-toe? ;Hilarious

Another common one I hear is Acropora, do you pronounce it as A-crop-ora or Ac-ro-pora?

If you would like clarification on pronunciations please ask and hopefully people smarter than me will chime in or if you would just like to correct common mispronunciations that drive you crazy this is your place to vent :)
What kind of acro is the one with purple tips?

What kind of acro is the one with purple tips?

not sure it’s just something I grabbed off the Internet.. all my A*Crop*Ora are just micro nubs ;)

A-CROP-RAH valida or nana would be my guess?

Vah-lid-ah ?, Nah Nah ? or say it like banana? lol

Your guess is as good as mine, Latin is tough
This whole thread is making my head spin. Most of these words I've never even said aloud before, I guess it's time to brush up if I want to be a sociable reefer

Disney have a coral frag tank filled with one just like that and it was awesome.. I haven't seen it in person since

Montee-poorah, not Mon-tip-o-rah

And it is most definitely nudy-brank not branch.
and Chonk.. not con-ch.

Nah,
Mon-tee-op-rah -

it almost sounds like mon-tee-off-rah when you hear Veron or Borneman say it

I Thought nudibranch was pronounced
noody-bronk or nu-di-braun-K

Tomato, tamoto lol

Those ch's are pronounced as K's.

Latin is tough
Latin is a language, as dead as dead could be. First it killed the Romans, now it's killing me!

Anyone want to take a stab at Pasmmocora coral? Picked up a small frag over the weekend and couldn’t understand the clerk when they told me what it was, again not wanting to seem dumb I just nodded my head in agreement and smiled ;Hilarious

I've stumbled with that one but pronounce it Puh-sam-uh-kora

I'm with you Daniel. I've pronounced Tunze every way possible I thought until I read "tunes" on this thread! :confused:;Shamefullyembarrased

Im now living in Texas so im used to a bit of local pronunciations
When I say cheeto they know what I mean
Great thread
Gurene = Green
Boerne = Burn ee
Manor = Main or
Going on 11 years in the south and these are the ones that really bother me:
Mississippi = Mis-sih-pee
Sell = Sale - they're said the same way so a lot of people will mix up the two when listing something for sale online.

Anyway, back to the topic, I think we've all learned at this point that it needs to be kay-to. If you're saying it as chee-tow then some newbie is going to learn the hard way that it ain't easy being cheesy.

How about this little fish?
Chrome-is
Not chrome-ies
Maxspect-gyre [gyrate- to rhythmically move back and forth] [Gyre, to move in a circular fashion]
Jire, soft G.
Not gire hard G.
