How I say them, and have heard some fraction of biologists say them (usually with some disagreement)

Acropora - ah CROP or ah
millepora - mill e POR ah
conch - konk
chiton - KITE on
detritus - de TRY tus
polychaete - pol e KEET (doesnt matter, since it's an invalid taxon now anyway! theyre just worms, or annelids if you need to be more specific)
Seriatopora - sar e ah TOP or ah
Pocillopora - pah ce LOP or ah
Nudibranch - **** e BRANK
Nematode - NEM a toad (this one is 50:50 with NEEM a toad)

Acropora spathulata. For some reason my brain insists on saying spatchulata. Every time.

You would think there would be some consistency between how you pronounce acropora, millepora and pocillipora but by this list there isn't.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that way about spathulata(maybe if I learned to say it right I could keep one long term!).

I learned this one on a recent trip to Oahu:
Kole is a Hawaiian word and is pronounced “coal-e”.

You would think! Nope, not at all. And if someone tries to pronounce them the same way they sound bizarre to me.

Thing is, I didnt develop those pronunciations based on textbook rules, but on how I heard other biologists say them. Then later at conferences I'd hear other biologists pronounce them differently and I was like, "we don't even agree on how to pronounce these things?"

I worked in a few different systems and only saw this in corals. I bet fish people do it too though, those names are terrible.

Simple-tons guide to pronounce words

Cheato—spaghetti stuff.
Acropora— colorful stick thing I will kill in 12 hours
Thule—expensive bike rack for m car
Porsche.. the car you wish you had
Gaz or gas. Philly folks know
Cray-on or crown. Colorful wax sticks from the restaurant
Conch -conk. Those things in key west they make fritters with

I live far away from home where English is a second language. So I hear all different pronunciations of different words. I always pronounce chaeto as “chay-tow” but I’ve heard people say it as “cheeto” (like the orange things). I saw BRS say it as “kay-tow” I’m assuming the latter is correct...
