I think maybe will be a good idea to add a page on this forum for the reefing words pronunciations like the ringtones page that you can heard the ringtone before purchasing or downloading.

Still not sure it’s right.. lol!I've heard that pronunciation but according to MW it is a long "O".Another good one.. I have always used the long “O” when saying Zoa’s however when saying the complete word zoanthids I have heard many people say zoo-anthids.
So I thought it would be fun and hopefully useful to start a thread for the proper pronunciation of all the different things related to Reef keeping, be it livestock or equipment I hear things pronounced so differently sometimes I struggle to even determine what someone’s actually talking about
For example do you pronounce Chaetomorpha as Kay-toe?

Or Chee-toe? ;Hilarious

Another common one I hear is Acropora, do you pronounce it as A-crop-ora or Ac-ro-pora?

If you would like clarification on pronunciations please ask and hopefully, people smarter than me will chime in or if you would just like to correct common mispronunciations that drive you crazy this is your place to vent![]()

In all honesty I started this thread to hopefully save myself some future embarrassmentkinda sad that after 3+ decades of reefing I still struggle with the ”lingo”.. I was interacting with a very knowledgeable young lady that works at one of my LFS’s over the weekend and just about every coral we discussed she pronounced differently than I would. I started to correct her but didn’t want to show my ignorance in case she was right ;Hilarious
Than on Tidal Gardens says cheeto. The ways he says corals names sounds good to me...but I still can not say cheeto.
I always thought it was chi-ton. My brain... it’s like all dumb and stuff.
Funny about sicce. I always wondered how to pronounce it until I heard someone from sicce say see-chay.Sometimes coral pronunciations are a way you can tell the difference between an old school reefer and a new reefer (not implying that either are right or wrong.
...and while we’re at it on vendor names, how about Sicce?
and while we’re at it on vendor names, how about Sicce?
Assuming they stick with the true German pronunciation, it should be E-hyme Yahger.Eheim Jager
Great one! Getting back to that dumb thing.. I have always pronounced it “sick” hopefully thats somewhat right.. lol
this is what I’m interested in not slang or potential language differences that may skew the correct pronunciation.
