No one can pronounce the name of our street. SCHUBACH. Calling in food for delivery can be hilarious! They always stutter the first couple of times they try.

A forum on the pronunciation of Latin would be helpful (joking). Have to be a doctor, pharmacist, or priest to get them right without being taught. Of course, if you actually CAN pronounce it, you are immediately deemed an expert!

I love fairy wrasses. I wish I could pronounce just the name of their genus!

absolutely.. some of the equipment and company names are worse than our livestock! For 20 years I pronounced Tunze as ”Ton-Zee”, but after hearing reps talking about their products I now pronounce it “tunes” Still not sure it’s right.. lol!

Another good one.. I have always used the long “O” when saying Zoa’s however when saying the complete word zoanthids I have heard many people say zoo-anthids.

I've heard that pronunciation but according to MW it is a long "O".

So I thought it would be fun and hopefully useful to start a thread for the proper pronunciation of all the different things related to Reef keeping, be it livestock or equipment I hear things pronounced so differently sometimes I struggle to even determine what someone’s actually talking about

For example do you pronounce Chaetomorpha as Kay-toe?

Or Chee-toe? ;Hilarious

Another common one I hear is Acropora, do you pronounce it as A-crop-ora or Ac-ro-pora?

If you would like clarification on pronunciations please ask and hopefully, people smarter than me will chime in or if you would just like to correct common mispronunciations that drive you crazy this is your place to vent

I got a notice yesterday to be nice on Reef2Reef and speak clearly so others will not be offended by what I post. So this morning I come on here and I find a throw down thread to discuss foreign languages and our inability to speachk them?

The whole idea makes me soo verrry angry. So first I reported you- but the mods did nothing so I guess I'll join you.

In all honesty I started this thread to hopefully save myself some future embarrassment kinda sad that after 3+ decades of reefing I still struggle with the ”lingo”.. I was interacting with a very knowledgeable young lady that works at one of my LFS’s over the weekend and just about every coral we discussed she pronounced differently than I would. I started to correct her but didn’t want to show my ignorance in case she was right ;Hilarious

I deferred to those I trusted in the reefing community in the beginning, until I heard certain people mispronounce words I absolutely know proper pronounciation for, like especially/expecially. As a result, I still dont know if its Toonzee, Toons, or Tunzee. For me I'll toss in a "or whatever" on words Im unsure of, sorta as a disclaimer.

English isn't my first language but then regardless of how some of us may pronounce the "salty" terminologies correctly or incorrectly, most of us tend to figure it out one way or another. Acropora is one heck of a tricky pronounciation ... ;Bookworm aahh heck just gimme the "acro"!!!!! ;Joyful

Assuming they stick with the true German pronunciation, it should be E-hyme Yahger.

Also agree with Sicce being Sea chay. No idea about Tunze. Looks like Toon zee to me, but I do agree it is probably Tunes.

Sicce is an Italian-based company and I’ve heard it pronounced “sea-chay“ by their vendor rep. I have not taken the time to ask about any potential connection to the Corsican meaning of the word.

As many have pointed out pronunciation would certainly very based on geographical differences but there has to be a absolute correct way to pronounce everything. when a company is named I‘m sure the founder pronounces it correctly as it’s intended and when that marine biologist discovers and names a new species of coral or invert I‘m sure he is also pronouncing it properly this is what I’m interested in not slang or potential language differences that may skew the correct pronunciation.
