If you have watched the weather channel in the past few days im sure you have heard about the storm that is coming the east coast.Im in northeast Pa and they are talking about my area getting it pretty hard. The last big storm left my town without power for 2 days and a few towns around me where out for several days.

I have a question. Can I use the battery powered bubblers they use for minnow buckets for fishing to put oxygen into my reef if the power goes out? Also will the bubbler have any affect on the Ph or alk?

What are some other things us reefers in the path of the storm can do to prepare for a possible power outage? What are some steps we can take to help preserve are reef when the power goes out? What type of reef stuff should we have stockpiled for our reefs?

I would like this to be an on-going conversation. Please add your expirences and storys so the rest of us who aren't as versed on this subject can learn.Thankyou!!!:rain:

Yes, you can use the bubblers. I have always kept several on hand, since I live very rural and we lose power frequently when it storms. I've heard of folks using an eggbeater to create turbulence on the surface, as well as using inverters running from their car battery to run air pumps. Sometimes you have to get inventive when the power goes out.

I invested in a generator. I have secondary circuits wired for my tanks. All I have to do is throw the switch and fire the generator and my tanks have circulation and heating /cooling.

I am planning on making 35 gallons of "fresh" saltwater. Also have enough rodi topoff water for a week.

Yes, by all means an air pump is a great idea. Also a 12V inverter from a car battery can run a circulation pump for days for about $100ish dollars. I have a power inverter as a back up for me, I want a generator as well, but haven't got that far yet. I'll be hitting up Craigslist soon.

My band's tour RV has a built in 30amp Generator. If my power goes out, I will most definately be backing that thing into my driveway and stealing power. That's my plan lol.

Think you would be better getting a generator -- will be able to run more for your tank, including a heater.
Plus, with a large enough one you will be able to keep your frig running.

During the summer there was a decent storm here and lost power, I finally broke down and bought a generator. Of course the power came back on whilst I was driving home with it, but still glad I have it. One town over didn't have power for 3 days, don't want to think what my tanks would have looked like with just a battery air stone.

I'm in southern New Jersey. It looks like I am in an area that might be getting a direct hit. :(

^^ last i heard it was heading straight for NJ :( good luck! Im in mass so its not looking good for me either..

We are all in it cuz the the size of the storm is so widespread. I just hope ConEd will be ready. Might go to home depot later for some sand bags cuz i am more worried about water coming in and flooding my basement fishroom.

From what the weather forecasters are predicting this could be an epic event. I wish all you people good luck. With proper preparations and planning I think you will all be fine.

I'm out on long island. Worste is that my house is powered by solar yet it won't work unless there is power coming in from the powerlines. Unless we get a small generator just to powerthe converter for the solar it would be like nothing happened but unfortunately my dad doesn't want to shell out cash for a gen.

Dang guys. Wish you guys all the best. Worry about yourself and family safety first. if you guys are looking for a generator then the Honda i2000 is a great one. I have a few I use for camping and other stuff and they run just like the cars.

Being a guy from SWFL and seeing storms my entire life, I wish y'all the best. Almost every reefer down here has a generator. Me personally, I have a 36 hour bubble maker (used in livewells) and runs on 2 D batteries. Y'all be safe and I wish y'all the best of luck.

go to the auto parts store spend the $100 on a small generator

personally I wont chance it, it is well worth the $500 for a decent generator to make sure $10,000 dosnt die

homedepot even sells a 7500w generator for $550

I was kind of passive to hearing about this storm but now after this thread and the fact many of you are saying in our prayers, especially being someone 30 blocks from the shore I'm starting to worry a bit and expecting far worse than I could comprehend. I've read this is supposed to be worse than any storm on record to hit the region. I wasn't affected at all by Irene but the fact that this one is supposed to be 3 days long is troublesome.

The best I can hope for is it diverts it target back to ocean away from long island, plus I feel If I do lose power it won't be for too long bases on the fact I'm 4 blocks from the high school, they won't let the kids go too long out of school, providing the storm isn't devastating.

I live in Miami, FL. and storms down hear is something we are used too. All I can say sandy hit use with a lot of winds and water. It was a pretty bad storm and it didn't even hit land fall. Wish you guys and your tanks the best. If I had to give you a piece of advise it would be to buy a small generator for the fishes. By how sandy affected us without hitting use directly I can definitely tell you to be prepared for it. It coming hard!!
