The WORST sound in reefing.....IS NO SOUND AT ALL!

No POWER! No Water flow! No sound..nada!

Do you agree?

I came home from a trip, walked downstairs to where the tank room is and NO SOUND! For a moment I panicked and then I quickly remembered that I don't have a tank anymore due to our impending move. Scared me...then made me sad!

hahaha... I do not totally agree. Even though silence in this case can be a very bad sign... It reminds me of the last time a strange sound coming from the tank scared me. The main return pump for some reason disconnected from the hose back to the tank. It was a regurgitant sound, rare, just in the morning when I woke up. When I went to see what was happening, my feet were wet, the wooden floor of the dining room half flooded. I tripped the electrical breaker fearing a shock and opened the sump door. The entire sump space was completely soaked, from floor to ceiling, the sump half empty and all the mess that that can mean. Fortunately, beyond having to dry everything and explain to my wife that this is the last time such an accident will happen in the fish tank, there were no major damages or animal losses.

The worst sound from an aquarium I ever heard was one night when I was looking at late TV programs.
It was like a pistol shot in the room, many times loader than the TV.
I stayed in my chair thinking of it was worth to take the risk to look out through the window and then I saw the cover glasses of my 420 gallon tank bouncing down in the tank.
I went up. opened the build in door and saw that the aluminium frame on the top of the tank was broken.
The four profiles holding back to frontglass was broken from the long profiles in the front or the backside.
And then when I was looking at the mess the silicon broke in the right back corner. A new sound - 300 gallons of water hitting the floor in a few minutes.
Luckily 4 inches of water was left in the tank so I could lift out the live rock and save the fishes and the corals.

Now I have a new floor with inbuildt heating, new wallpaper and even the roof is new with other positions for the lamps.
And a course a new tank. Now it is 430 gallons. Upgrade is a must - downgrade is a defeat. Looking at it now it is a major upgrade Of the room and the tank but it took me a year to leave the loss and get joy with reefing and a bit with life again.
Never thought that the loss of an aquarium would mean that much but seeing the hole after a big tank in the wall everytime the TV was on didnt make it better.

Silence is pretty bad, but hearing water dripping is the most terrifying sound in reefing. At least if the power's out, you can do something, like aerate the water or float a hot water bottle. When the tank springs a leak, you can only move your fish and corals into rubber bins or a spare tank and hope nothing dies.

The absolute worst sound in the hobby is a loud "Tink!!!!!" immediately followed by a "Whooosh".

Worst sound I have ever heard in this hobby, was the bottom front seam separating. Sort of a strange noise, water hit the ceiling and the tank emptied in probably 2 to 5 minutes.

it was probably more like 1 minute, but panic and terror causes a time dilation effect (it’s been proven in Physics)

Tonight I thought I heard thunder, it was just a snail touching the powerhead cord. This makes a distinct sound that freaks out anyone hearing it the first few times.

The sound of silence…and the smell
Of a nearby ocean after finding the DT drained out overnight and the carpet was soaked. Purple and yellow tangs were Casper’s. A lot of death.

I'm glad I stumbled across the thread, as I was just about to make a very similar one!!

I came home from RAP TX and there were some sounds that just weren't right in my house....
It was too quiet by my 110... the skimmer hadn't been plugged in all weekend..... ugh. Ok. I plug it back in. Then, I start prepping some new SW for a water change. I walk away and heard the sound of water, and lots of it, spilling onto my tile floor....
The skimmer, apparently, was unplugged all weekend, bc if you plugged it in, it overflowed allllll over behind the tank. (Skimmer is Octopus 2000 HOB).
This is only happening bc my ATO decided it was tired of working and filed for unemployment. Anyway, to keep water levels stable, I enlisted the roomie to top off the 110 with 1 gallon of water every evening. I dunno how much he actually put in (pretty sure a 5g bucket was used rather than my pitcher) bc the skimmer immediately overflowed. I didn't top it off for a couple of days now, and the water level is corrected and skimmer back to working properly.
So to me, the scariest sound is dripping water. I can't deal with a leak!
