what is your nitrate?
Generally close to 0, I use the seachem test and it reads a tint of pink, so like 0-1
Just for my education, If a coral grows well, would it still need more nutrients?

First picture was taken 9/10/15, Second was 12/30/15. Even if it grows well, adding more nitrate to the tank would help right?

you have some great growth. if anything id bump nitrate to 5.

i think phophate is limiting it though.

really we are splitting hairs and you really need to know what you are doing if you go this route.

i mean. you would get negligible growth increase at all.

you have a nice system

i have never cleaned my sump since i set it up....

i got a bout of doc here and there but this is what you look for if you need a skimmer on or not....

see the yellow brown stuff?

that is 9 months of accumulation. never cleaned

If you don't turn off the biopellet and turn your skimmer off completely get ready for a cyano outbreak from hades

I'm just trying to learn the nuances of keeping corals happy to continue my success. *knocks on wood* In your opinion, what would be the best way to bump nitrates up to 5? I currently have a lot of live rock in the tank (at least 100-120lbs) and siporax (sintered glass media) in my sump which may be aiding in keeping nitrates lower than what would be optimal. I'm open to suggestions that would help my stick garden. :)

"i" use seachem flourish nitrogen.

i suggest going twilliards route with spectracide stump remover.

he can link his thread

Fwiw... hey a red sea pro no3 kit. The other kits aren't very accurate at low levels. Red sea pro will tell you if there's a trace present as it reads down to 0.25ppm. With a good eye you can see 0.1ppm

Thanks!

I always recommend removing anything you have added to aid in removing nitrate before you start dosing. IMHO it's much better to go as natural as possible with dosing nitrate as a last resort.

ill kinda vary on this. you need "clean water".

i cant take someone's crap water and add it to my own without some bad issues arising. my wife runs a 40 breeder with a clown trigger and her crap water does not help me.

"clean" dosed water works best ime

Well, I didn't really add anything to aid in removing nitrate, it was more for the bioload until I learned about low oxygen denitrification that can happen. I can pull the siporax, but the live rock is kind of stuck until I get a new tank or reboot. Realistically, all I really run is a skimmer as "export" intentionally. I'll pull the media and see what happens to the levels then move from there.

Would the higher nitrate levels also help with colors?

Oh! Okay well there is not any yellow brown stuff mostly white? And there is some small spots but I mostly think that's from before when I had a refug and a small Protein skimmer in the same sump.

Running a skimmer will prevent a cyano outbreak though? @Pete polyp
I mean there's been huge changes to my tank in the last month haha so who knows what will happen.

Just tested Nitrate and there is already a change of color. I think its at 0.25 or a little lower. Maybe because I don't have that many corals in my tank? So it didn't get absorbed so fast?

I guess I can use a few corals for that experiment and see what happens in the next few months.

In your opinion, do you think this milli is "pale"?

dude. i chuck all my zoas and trash corals that grow like mad in my wife's tank so they just sit there in perpetual non-growth.

she has high trates and the like but her water is filthy.

i need clean water for growth

I don't suggest removing any live rock, but any other added filtration could be removed to see the effects.
