Tomini tang scratching

cross contamination is a big reason, need two of every piece of equipment, stress on fish from being chased and caught over and over again, need to follow the directions really closely. Ive just seen a lot of posts about using TTM and then still having ich.

I don’t really want to use copper since it will suppress the immune system

What about hydrogen peroxide baths then into a sterile qt tank?

Maybe not even h202 baths but dosing into the tank

I’ve read that it kills ich in the free swimming stage so theoretically, if I do it for long enough, it should kill off all the ich

Before assuming its ich, It may be flukes which causes this behavior. To eliminate the possibility of flukes, give it a freshwater dip in preferably a dark bucket for about 5 minutes. Assure the water temperature is the same as the tank. You can add a pinch of baking soda to assist with PH.
Return fish to show tank and look on bottom of bucket even with flashlight and look for presence of what looks like fish scales or sesame seeds. Those are your flukes.
If none, plan B will be precautionary protozoan treatment with low dose copper or coppersafe.

@Jay Hemdal

This tank is loaded with coral so no copper
Would ruby reef rally be good for that?

Well if it is flukes why do t I just dose ruby reef rally pro at full dosage?
I don’t really want to stress the fish out so much with removing and doing a fw dip

ruby reef is a snake oil if its ich... as for the peroxide treatment I haven't read anything really scientific on ich. I agree with Vetteguy. Try a freshwater dip and see if you can see flukes. Use a black bucket to make it easier on yourself to see them. If it isn't flukes id do one of three things...

1. Pull all fish and put into a qt tank and treat with copper power. Slowly raise the levels to therapeutic levels and maintain levels for 30 days. Copper power or copper safe is a good copper to use as its not nearly as harsh as other copper.

2. "manage ich" reefers including humble fish have been very successful with this choice. Maintain good water quality, limit aggression between fish and feed good foods mixed with vitamins and you shouldn't have an issue with an ich outbreak.

3. Basically a mix of one and two. You say you are in the market for a upgrade tank. Manage ich until you find that tank you are looking for. once you have it use your 40 as a qt (pull inverts, coral, live rock and sand) treat the fish with copper while your new tank cycles. As the 30 days are up transfer the fish into your new display (if its cycled)

Id probably go number three but thats just my opinion

This is more of a broad treatment currently, not really targeting anything

it could... I just don't like adding chemicals to my display. few years ago I tried kick ich in my display as it said it was reef safe, it killed almost all my corals

The symptoms of flukes match the fish almost exactly from humble fish website

I dont know much about it so I cant give you an opinion or advice on it

My lfs owner really likes it and I like it too since it cured my clownfish of a bacterial infection
