Guess it really comes down to which is correct. Might have to send in an ICP test to try to confirm (not that I am wanting to do that even).

Not for something lile ca alk and mag... home kits are good and accurate if they are new or well maintained.
For alk I would trust the alktronic since you have a history of accuracy with it.

The ‘feels cheap’ idea has always seemed odd to me for products that one isn’t handling regularly. I am kind thrilled that they aren’t making these things big and heavy if they don’t need to - saves on everything from manufacturing to shipping. Save the world and stuff no?

I wonder how much more drift will happen by time when all these peristaltic tubings start wearing out. Especially since the recommendations is to do maintenance at 18 months.
None of the peristaltic pumps I have used so far can survive more than a year. Tubings wear out between 9 to 12 months which degrade accuracy of dosing. If an equipment depend on the accuracy of dosing to run amy type of calculations like what kh testers do, this effect the teater accuracy
Time will tell.

This is why has confused me about people unhappy about sending the unit in for servicing or having to service it themselves. All peri pumps need service.

Yup, that's why I appreciate design's where I can change the head easily and cheap. With my khg changing the pri head cost ~25$ and take 5min.
Same on my old bubble magus. While I did not reach this stage on my mew ghl doser but I believe it's similar style and price point.
Trident pri pumps looks unconventional and rather complex. Not sure how easy servicing these pumps will be in home by avrage consumer. I think that's why the high price tage on the maintenance and the early heads up that people need to send it to the vendor.
Also my previous experience made me suspicious of the 18 months claim..
Time will tell.

It gonna be like 80 bucks for the diy kit. I don’t think it will be much more complex than any other tiny perk pump. That said, I don’t think I want to do it and am happy to pay them to do it for me. Price seems fair to me.

Is the 80$ firm? I have heared many numbers.
Would be nice to understand the official number if its published..maybe I missed it.

I was saving up for the Trident. I say "was" because once I learned that Neptune doesn't let you adjust the amount of testing to a reasonable frequency to lower the use of reagent, I completely eliminated them from my wish list. GHL complete control set up is what Im saving up for now.

Someone somewhere has to have a standard you can buy so we can test the accuracy. The drift you are seeing is a bit worrying. Especially post calibration. I really don't want this to turn into a "trends" based number like certain other things seem to be...

The minimum testing cycle makes since as the regents degrade once open; which isn't any different than the other test kits on the market.

OK, this thread settles it - thanks R2R. Was looking at all sorts of options to get a Trident down here in Oz (including grabbing one on my upcoming business trip to the states) to slot into my suite of Neptune gear. But after reading all this I'm thinking 'screw it'. The Kh Guardian does Alk well, is available down here and even interfaces to Apex. Sure there is no Ca or Mg, but so what - I can check that with my Hanna Checkers once a week to tune dosing and save a bucket load on reagents to. Sorry, Neptune, I love most of your gear, but you lost me on the flakey ATK (for a good ol reliable Tunze 3155) and now your fapping around on Trident availability have lost me to Coralvue for that part of the complex reef automation equation.

There are standards you can get from almost any scientific supply house. For our ICP write up we used https://highpuritystandards.com/water-standards/sea-water/ and they likely have what you might want.
All tests drift, all the time. Calibrating before every set of tests can help. For salinity, I have been going crazy testing over the last year and have finally settled on the Misco because it is waterproof, has +/-1psu, a well cover, and you calibrate it in 10 seconds every testing session.
