Trying to grow sps

Actually what I originally posted was to do with DOCs which you also called dumb but was the source of my problem before as even though all my levels were perfect I had a very high TDS in the tank and alot of dissolved organics as indicated by a number of things. If you dont believe having high levels of dissolved organics can cause issues then I would suggest researching that. It has been linked to ALOT of maladies.

disproven. no skimmer. thx. try again.
wanna see my dirty sandbed?

lemme ask you this. and explain to everyone reading. what did you do to remove those DoCs?

the antidote will tell us quite a bit.

Only way I could see an ato having an effect on sps is if you were dosing kalk through it, wouldnt just be affecting temp or salinity at that point but affecting other params as well, keeping alk and calc more stabil. Only a newbie though so not sure how far my oppinion goes

would have more of an impact. this guy is on the right track. but still. not ato driven imo.

More water changes and less food in the tank and for me running extruded carbon helped also as well as changing my skimmer. And no, skimmers are not 100% necessary but having ran tanks with and without them I definitely prefer having one.

look at all that trash... if i just had water quality like you right?

i wont say anymore. my results in growoffs will say more than your "read" experience

Do you dose trace, I've heard of overdosing trace some elements being toxic and especially to more sensitive corals

Also, and maybe you said already, but what do you use to test alk? Recently used 2 different titration tests against a hannah checker and found the hannah to be 2 dkh lower than both the others which put the dkh at 13 instead of 11

I think the truth will speak in the results of the true water paremeters..I definitely think (or know)that the reason behind all the dead sps is due to a water quality issue (high nitrates, ammonia)I for one don't like running my tank with alk that high and depending on what the paremeters are from where you got the sps would have a huge factor as to why they die so fast..if the alkalinity from where you bought them are kept at 8.5 and your putting them in your 10.5 dkh tank without acclimating them.far as skimmers go I only run mine when my nitrates creep up to 20ppm which im dosing seachem flourish nitrogen.. ...I try to maintain nitrates between 10-15ppm to get the bright colors out of my sps..my bioload is minimal,I maintain alk and calcium thru a calcium reactor and have everything automated thru my apex..do I need all this?absolutely not..before all this I manually dosed and skimmers where unheard of

Since when were bullies allowed on Reef2Reef? There are multiple ways to successfully grow acropora, hence all the different methods. I abhor some of the arrogant posts on this thread.

Just FYI, Salifert has always been consistent since I started using it 6 years ago. Regarding your prior post to this, it's generally a good rule of thumb to not dose anything you can't test for. Periodic water changes will supplant the elements used.

Say what you will but I have been in the hobby for over 15 years and that pales in comparison to some but I have learned a few things along the way. One of them being that there is more than one way to run a tank. What works for one doesnt always work for another.

Also, are we seriously suggesting keeping mass amounts of SPS without dosing? Is your name Joe Schmuck now??? Gimme a break. If I didnt dose my tank these acros would be dead a long time ago as they pull alk and calcium at an insane rate. If yourd insinuating to go onto a forum and expect every piece of advice to be good then I would say your comment disproves that right off the bat.

like any forum. the truth comes out naturally if you let it. dont take it personally

good looking tank...

now explain to the class how your hard work wasnt at play instead of being an aquarist and the ato magically colored everything up?

we can go as far as you want with this...

Had good luck with my red sea kit so far, compared it to the lab equipment at work and the two were .03 different, dead on. I think its mostly knowing how to use things properly sometimes, if you know your chosen kit and were to stop at what color for the right results

Nothing is magic just hard work and dedication. No piece of equipment is going to do it for you...gotta do it yourself. Equipment is no better or worse than the person utilizing it

and now...

we got to the meat and potatoes of the matter.

YOU knew you needed an ato based on your work habits and everything else.
the ato did not magically do this for you. nor would a skimmer.

at the end of the day, the evidence becomes more prevelant.

this is all i am saying

I dont even run an ATO

well regardless. we can say you are a very good aquarist. but atos or skimmers do not make good aquarists.

i think every "good" aquarist will say...

"you need good water".

how you meet that, is beyond this thread imho.

thanks for sharing btw. fantabulous tank.

ATO isnt required but lets face it, it would be for some, if your work schedule and personality is such that you wait til water level in your tank drops 6" before topping it off can cause a nasty flux in params. Should said person be trying to keep acros in that situation is up for debate if you have to rely on ato to keep a successful tank

possible. but i dont see frags dying in 3 days attributing to an ato.

dude has other issues
