Under Gravel filter

Remember I only bought two of them in my life. One in the 70s and one 3 years ago when I got a slightly larger tank and moved here.

I think Dolomite comes from Italy and must have been used for something else. But when salt tanks came out, there was no crushed coral so dolomite it was.

250 GPH is enough water to pump under each plate, No more or you will have problems. I tried many flow
rates.

Actually I think I use 150GPH. Now with all these numbers being thrown around, I forgot. It's in my book someplace.
Any higher flow and will just by pass out the closest exit? It seems like i remember lower flow was the key. I ran many aquarium with the UGF until my final one was RFUG. I never had any problems but i didnt run them longer than 4 years to know. I was always moving back in those days. Thats intersting about the dolomite and never really though about it then. I just remember it was pretty large grain size about like that colored freshwater gravel they sell today.

Last time I did a reef I tried the bullet proof reef you put pvc pipe on the bottom of your tank then square light diffuser on top nylon screen crushed coral another screen sand . You leave a hole in one corner cut a 45 degree angle at the bottom put it all the way to the bottom of your tang put a power head on it . After you tank is going good you pull the pipe now you have a plenum system.
That is interesting , I never heard about that style before. Did it not work well?

Ahhhh, the memories. It's been a while since I ran my penn-plax undergravel filter in a metaframe tank with a slate bottom. Good times, good times. Though I only used them for smaller freshwater tanks. Dad had Dynaflow's on the 55, because he got the GOOD stuff.

My Uncle had a small tank with a pair of clowns and an anemone running a bubble-driven undergravel when I was a kid. He had that tank set up for YEARS, and it always looked pristine with the shiny white dead coral on top of shiny white crushed coral substrate.
Yep thats what i did too....it worked. Every so other take all the dead corals out and re bleach lol....good times

I got red flat worms put flatworm exit in my tank to spec and after alloted time water change a lot of charcoal and protien skimmer on high . But salt creep got in my airway of my skimmer and shut off the air and I did not get it out in time . It killed everything but my clowns. If you want to try it look up bullet proof reef. They have instructions for any tank. And what to dose.

4 years ago. I packed my stuff and moved . Now that I am settled and got the freshwater out of my system again. I had a mbuna tank that was producing babys left and right had someone fish i couldn't keep up with maintenance. So to make thing worse 18 years ago I had a 6 way plug screwed into a recept my tank had been up for 3 years . One night at 1.30 in the morning my smoke alarm went off I ran through the house and seen the glow underneath my tank the plastic 6 way on fire wall on fire to the ceiling. Ran to the kitchen grabbed fire extinguisher and put the fire out . That was my first saltwater tank. So hopefully 3rd time is a charm . So far so good two months in fish are happy and zoas on the way.

Wow that be terrifying your wall plugs on fire around your tank. I think its time for some good luck with this new setup. What fish do you have any particular zoanthids your getting?

Just got a yellow tang 299 dollars 7 blue green chromis 2 clarkii clowns neon goby one spot fox face hovens wrasse . 13 it has to be a lucky number right. I have 6 heads of whammin watermelon. Growing well. And a pink and purple syco. It was in bad shape it is starting to open up nice still have not got a id on it yet. I have 10 plugs on the way from Florida. Have a buddy out there that sells coral for a living. He dips everything 3 times before it goes into his frag tanks . I let him pick the 10 so it will be a surprise.

Keep an eye on your parameters. That's a ton of fish really quickly

I’ve still got an undergravel filter from like “200 years ago,” not in use, but I just can’t get rid of it.

I cycled my rock in a trash can for 4 months with a dead shrimp. So the rock has been up and running for 6 months.
