I am a newbie (Comparatively speaking), bought a coral with “blue tip” in its name. Gorgeous piece in the pictures. Turns out the tips are white and look blue in blue light. So the question is “Is this unethical, wrong or ok practice by the seller”. When I reached out to them they just confirmed the whole light thing.
is this ethical, wrong or ok?
should I have known to ask if the blue is due to light or if it is actually blue?Great learning experience.

If things in the background is blue like sand or white egg crate with a blue tint it can be a good indicator as to whether the coral in the photo may be bluer than it actually is under white lights
It is a green torch with white tips in blue light the tips look blue. The name has “blue tip” in it which implies to me that the tips are blue regardless of light. Therefore my dilema.

That does sound a bit shiesty. If it doesn't have actual blue tips then I would consider that false advertising.

Have you looked at your tank in daylight ( not artificial lights) ? Most corals are just brown or have very little color to them. I normally ask for a day light picture to compare but I know most pictures are under a lot of blue

I didn't say mention the seller. Others may have had the same coloration yours does. Sometimes lighting differences can change the appearance.
Yes you are right. If enough people say it is wrong or unethical I will mention the name too.

So you are saying it is ok to name it as “blue tip”. That is ok?

While I think it is wrong/unethical, it’s your responsibility to know what you’re buying.
I agree with this to a point. False advertising is still false advertising. I feel that it is a vendor's responsibility to be as up front with people as possible. Unfortunately everyone has a different view of what is unethical, wrong, etc.

Thank you. Did you get a chance to seethe pics?

A lot of corals look brown in daylight. Its our lighting that gives them the pop.

Most corals don't look exactly like the pic....it is best to buy in person. It helps if the vender has a daylight pic and a blue light pic.

Some photos are edited with Photoshop to be deceiving.. which sucks.

It's pretty obvious by that picture that it was under blues. Also pretty sure no torch has true blue tips under white light.

If you Google blue tipped torch you will see many different torches with blue tips ...none of them natural. It is just the lights reflection.

Consider this a learning experience.

But if you look at most corals that have color in our tanks and are brown in the wild, what do you consider that? I know what you’re saying and I’m not defending it , just trying to get you to look at it from a different perspective. Mother Nature probably says the same thing as you about your tank;)

The lighting is very different between the two tanks. I would ask for a white light pic from the vendor. I'm betting you'll be surprised that it looks just like yours. Btw, it looks like a healthy coral!
