Upgrade: Sold my MP40's for Tunze 6095

i run 3 x 6105's on my 150 gallon tank with tunze as my return pump. i use to run vortechs before i switched to tunze and i am really happy with switching them out.
 
I'm on the fence between Tunze and Ecotech.

why the switch?

German engineering and built like a tank. Low maintenance, quiet operation, excellent customer service. I have 2 6105's in my 90 gallon and a 10 year old 6100 that is creating a wave motion all controlled with my Full Apex controller, so their is no need for the VDM add on.

I couldn't be happier. I am considering a MP40 also just to have the battery back up in case of power outages.

Honestly, I never considered vortechs loud but they lack the quality and distance of flow that Tunze provides. I had two MP40's on a 40 breeder and as a test, I turned one off, stuck my hand in at the half way mark on the tank. At the half way mark running on 80% I couldn't feel the vortech and I started to feel the vortech was very remiss at almost $500 per pump for performance like that. The Vortech was fun for creating a wave and undertow was its biggest selling feature. However, I shortly learned the undertow wasnt creating random flow, you constantly have water moving to the same point, the vortech. The vortech lacks the ability to place the pump anywhere but halfway up the pane of glass or it was sucking air from the top or spitting sand from the bottom. With Tunze I still get all the undertow I want but a single pump reaches the other end of my aquiarium no problem. Also the ring current that flow created actually picked up detritus my vortechs were missing, I was really worried making the switch but now that I have I wont ever second guess going with Tunze.

This is such a joke. I run my mp40es at 80% on my 90 gallon and when I stick my hand in half way I feel it just fine.
 
My Mp 40s were very well aligned and in perfect working order, I stand by my statement, it is what it is my friends.
 
i made a switch during my built after talking to lot of guys using vortecs...
i shiped back two mp60s for a tunze 6155,6305 and they r running along with my wave box on a tunze controller...coudnt be happier
 
Vortechs are like pc's they work till a component breaks down and you either replace it or send it in for repair. While tunze is like a mac and very rarely breaks down

When did Tunze release the 6095? It seems like a recent event. If this is the case, they've made a pretty shrewd move by placing their latest pump in the performance (and price) gap between the MP10 and MP40. Given the significant jump between the MP10 and MP40, it seems like a lot of consumers (myself included) would choose an intermediate option even if performance is arguably different (better, worse, whatever) just to have a pump that is better suited to their tank. I really like seeing this debate rage on boards like this and hope that it will encourage EcoTech to respond with an innovative new product or two before it's time for me to set up my next tank!
 
Who here has some experience with the Tunze controllers? I having trouble deciding between the three option I saw! I plan on having just two pumps with the possibilty of adding a wavebox in the future. I like to create alternating long currents, waves and maybe I would like to have the option of creating some sort of random mode. Whats are you using that works best?

I run the 6096 controller it is easy to use and program. I run 3 x 6105 with one of those on pulse mode making a 2" wave

Think 2 of these would be ok for a 180? 6x2 footprint with a couple 1300gph pumps on back
Two 6105 would be a better choice for a 180. And there's a very good chance they'd allow you to remove the 1,300GPH pumps in the back.

You can plug them right into the wall and run them without the controller. You can also change the flow rate of them depending on which jumper (voltage) you decide to run them on. You just can't ramp them up and down without a controller.
This is correct. All of our controllable pumps can be run without a controller. In this case, output level is controlled by the power supply voltage jumpers.

Anyone have a picture of the tunze 6095. I have always had vortechs, as I have thought the tunze were an eye sore as they were so big. but the tunze 6095's have caught my eye, and i have been thinking of making the switch.

It sounds like the 7096 would be the best one for you. It's our most versatile controller, with more options than the others. The controller itself is programmed with software on your (PC or Mac) computer and then the program is uploaded to the 7096 so the computer can be disconnected. It would allow you to control pumps with alternating currents of varying length and strength and also control a wavebox or a pump with wave timing. If you wanted something similar but without the need for a computer, then the 7095 would be the way to go.

I've got 2 questions. First, can the 6095 be controlled by a reefkeeper? 2nd would a a 6095 be enough for a custom 117g with a mag 18 with for return nozzles?

Digital Aquatics makes this module that allows the Reefkeepr to control any and all of our controllable pumps.

What are the dimensions of your tank and what kinds of corals do you keep?

DC power source like a deep cycle/marine battery, car battery, solar panel, etc - I think you just have to add their so-called "Safety Connector" to where the pump currently connects to your AC/DC transformer - i think it gives you a fuse to protect your pump and break outs for connecting (e.g.) a battery. You could even buy the Vortech battery backup kit to use with it, but I think that's your most expensive option.

My tank dimensions are 40/28/28.
You would need two 6095 for a tank that size. But this depends somewhat on how much actual flow you're getting out of the Mag 18. (It's difficult for me to estimate how much water movement you're getting with head pressure, plumbing friction losses and having it split between four returns.)

Thanks Matt, that's a good summary. :) All of our controllable pumps do run on DC and all of them can be powered by battery. The Safety Connector is the best way to set them up for battery backup, as it has both a fuse for protecting the pump and also the relay which automatically switches to battery when it senses a power outage.
