Honestly, I never considered vortechs loud but they lack the quality and distance of flow that Tunze provides. I had two MP40's on a 40 breeder and as a test, I turned one off, stuck my hand in at the half way mark on the tank. At the half way mark running on 80% I couldn't feel the vortech and I started to feel the vortech was very remiss at almost $500 per pump for performance like that. .
Two 6105 would be a better choice for a 180. And there's a very good chance they'd allow you to remove the 1,300GPH pumps in the back.Think 2 of these would be ok for a 180? 6x2 footprint with a couple 1300gph pumps on back
This is correct. All of our controllable pumps can be run without a controller. In this case, output level is controlled by the power supply voltage jumpers.You can plug them right into the wall and run them without the controller. You can also change the flow rate of them depending on which jumper (voltage) you decide to run them on. You just can't ramp them up and down without a controller.
Anyone have a picture of the tunze 6095. I have always had vortechs, as I have thought the tunze were an eye sore as they were so big. but the tunze 6095's have caught my eye, and i have been thinking of making the switch.

It sounds like the 7096 would be the best one for you. It's our most versatile controller, with more options than the others. The controller itself is programmed with software on your (PC or Mac) computer and then the program is uploaded to the 7096 so the computer can be disconnected. It would allow you to control pumps with alternating currents of varying length and strength and also control a wavebox or a pump with wave timing. If you wanted something similar but without the need for a computer, then the 7095 would be the way to go.Who here has some experience with the Tunze controllers? I having trouble deciding between the three option I saw! I plan on having just two pumps with the possibilty of adding a wavebox in the future. I like to create alternating long currents, waves and maybe I would like to have the option of creating some sort of random mode. Whats are you using that works best?

What are the dimensions of your tank and what kinds of corals do you keep?
I couldn't be happier. I am considering a MP40 also just to have the battery back up in case of power outages.

You would need two 6095 for a tank that size. But this depends somewhat on how much actual flow you're getting out of the Mag 18. (It's difficult for me to estimate how much water movement you're getting with head pressure, plumbing friction losses and having it split between four returns.)Very cool. I'll read up on it today.

Thanks Matt, that's a good summary.Maybe CraigB can correct me or otherwise chime in on this, but all of Tunze's controllable pumps are DC powered and can be hooked up to any(?) DC power source like a deep cycle/marine battery, car battery, solar panel, etc - I think you just have to add their so-called "Safety Connector" to where the pump currently connects to your AC/DC transformer - i think it gives you a fuse to protect your pump and break outs for connecting (e.g.) a battery. You could even buy the Vortech battery backup kit to use with it, but I think that's your most expensive option.

All of our controllable pumps do run on DC and all of them can be powered by battery. The Safety Connector is the best way to set them up for battery backup, as it has both a fuse for protecting the pump and also the relay which automatically switches to battery when it senses a power outage.
