Yea i was afraid of that...i guesss jumped the gun on this guy. I have really wanted one for quite sometime i never tried one in my first tank. Are the branch type hammers easier to keep?
Noted thanks for thatYes, much easier and forgiving
I like branching because it is easier to frag. You can sell it or trade for something you don't have.Noted thanks for that
Thats why i was worried about running carbon because nitrates have been low from the start. I dont like the idea of dosing for nitrates, so i have been over feeding a bit to try and compensate but i dont want to cause other issues because of that.Make sure you nitrates don't hit zero keep them about 3 to 5 hammers need nurtients.
I have been using a toothbrush to clean it off hopefully i dont do more harm than good with that approach.Get the slime off, it will irritate the hammer and overtime he will let his skin go lose.
You could try an air hose, but be carefull too not come too close as it can suck quite well. So you don't put pressure on the coral itself, or use a turkey blaster.
But get that slime off, if you will keep it on..it will irritate the euphyllia.
always thought it did...good to knowActivated carbon does not remove nitrate.
Thanks for the info i appreciate itAs long as you didn't brush the flesh of the euphyllia too much you should be fine.
If you had kept it like this, it would have never opened. It was covered in red cyano, before you know it covers the full coral.
Euphyllia's that are irritated to the flesh, that hatches to the base tends to "scroll up" (trying to get it not touching) which can lead to death. If you don't get the irritator off.
A tip, in future try to go for the branching hammers. A wall hammer is nice, but once a part of it dies off, there is no recovery. You can pull it through for some weeks more, but eventually it will get more and more flesh
away. A branching hammer is in my opinion easier, if you lose a head, the others stay unharmed.

This is an example of flesh lose, i could never save my wall euphyllia's once it came to this stage.
Good luck mate!
For anyone who may or may not be interested i did a water change on tuesday and tested yesterday and the numbers are coming around a little...
Cal 410
Mag 1200
Alk 6
Nitrates 1-2 (barely a shade of pink in the redsea test)
Ph 8.4
Salinity 1.026
I keep scrubbing the slime off the hammer almost daily it seems to look best in the morning without the lights on.
