What are your Reefing Pet Peeves!

Ironically, another of mine is people that overprice their used gear and then get all offended when they get 'lowball' offers. My response generally is that is was a 'fairball' offer . First rule of second hand gear is that 'sellers expect more for their used gear then they'd be willing to pay for yours'. The second rule is, figure out what percentage of the useful life remains and offer accordingly.

LOL - 'fairball', good one. On equipment that's a good rule. I follow something similar to that, and a lowball to me is when someone wants to pay 50% or even less of that. I usually don't try to sell junk and I often give things away if I feel they are at 25% or less of their lifetime or if they are a common or starter coral.

On a different forum we had a great thread laughing at people listing things on CL for crazy prices. "Over $1k invested, includes $20 worth of fish and dirty rocks. Asking $900 firm and you have to come pick it up".

Hmm... you wouldn't be implying that someone may have poor maintenance practices yet blame the manufacturer when it doesn't last as long as expected?

LOL, Not specifically him. There are many threads like that. He is just the latest to be called out! Many are the same that violate my first peeve, then point fingers when it all goes wrong.

Also the "such and such coral is easier" sayings. Deeming the entire group easy because two of the Genera are hardy is a little ridiculous. Also that the groups themselves used in the hobby aren't scientifically accurate (;

5 years ago I was looking for a bigger tank. found this guy selling a 180 that was '3-4 years old'. Looked at it and it was actually a tank that I had sold 4 years prior ..... and it was 20 years old (which is why I got rid of it). Can't make this stuff up.

2 things come to mind. Foremost is my inability to get my levels in balance & keep the algae down 2nd, Is that I can't find a healthy fish at more than several lfs in my city .

My 0.02 cents:
1) its always the guy asking novice questions that then turns around and says they've been reef keeping for 10/20/25 years.
Clearly, if you are asking how to keep zoanthids alive you are not as experienced as you'd like others to believe.
2) People will spend thousands on a frag but its like pulling teeth for them to buy quality equipment.
You can't get upset at your $12 heater for dying after a year, you get what you pay for.

OK, so I clearly shouldn't be admitting that after 20 years in the hobby, I have just 3 months of experience in keeping zoas and mushrooms.

Also, again, saying the entire group of Zoanthids and Palythoa are easy to keep isn't true. But you do have a point.

Keeping them is not the issue for me, they have always just been a throw away coral to me. If there was room for them on the rock, there was room for another SPS. Now that I have this 25 gallon, I am trying new things.

You do realize that that movie and show inspired a whole lot of new hobbyists? Not such a bad thing after all. In the end, all exposure is good exposure! I used to think the same until I found out that the show Tanked inspired some of my most loyal clubmates.

Some people keep Acropora without issue and can't keep Zoanthus alive, some can't keep Euphyllia alive, it's all different for everyone.

They aren't very nice people. And they may have inspired people with their theatrics but it doesn't mean they have good practices.

Watching tanked got me looking on YouTube only to find out that people have “LIVE” coral and anemones and all kinds of cool stuff.

Which got me into reefing after spending months reading and learning here and finding BRStv!

So now When i watch tanked and notice certain things, it bugs me.

Since in reality they really do have poor husbandry and business practices...I disagree with it being finger pointing. I agreed people had been inspired by them, a lot of people. But I stand by what I said above.
