What coral just does not work for you?

I can't grow mushrooms, zoos, leathers, have a hammer that does ok, and a couple SPS. I think my flow is too high maybe

Believe it or not...birdsnest...

same here. i have several sps thriving in my tank, other corals growing like crazy and lots of color, but i am like oh for four with birdsnest


I almost pulled the trigger on number 5 last Friday out of a personal obsession to prove i can keep one, but came to my senses and picked up a pocillopora instead - which is extending it's polyps nicely in its new home.

i'm charlie brown and birdsnest is lucy holding the football.

Its ok gonis never do well in most tanks. I have heard of the ora red gonis being hardier though.

Euphyllia of any type! I’ve had torches, grape coral, and frogspawn all die within a month. Had a frogspawn do good for 3 months, added another one and then both died shortly after. ‍

I feel for you mate , zoa grow crazy in mine ....to the point of starting to get abit out of control , but I still add the odd frag lol some are just to colourful to leave in the LFS

My goniopora has been upset for almost a whole year! It hasn’t open to its fullest for no reason. Also Wild acros do amazing for 2-3 months and bam RTN. I stick to the aquacultured big name ones and they do just fine

I can't get Zoas to grow in any of my three tanks. Frustrating because I really want a big healthy garden of zoas.

Make your water filthy I am actually being quite serious.

I just checked your thread. Looks good. If your potassium is in check try feeding your fish more and increasing the flow. The reason I am saying to increase the flow is that your monties and your acro branches look a bit thin. Also it looks like your water level is too high for you to kick up some major waves, I have the same issue with my tank, to prevent the water from spilling over I would suggest lowering your pumps within the tank that way you won't get as many waves. As far as the feeding goes, your glass looks pristine, and you have a top-notch equipment. Corals need to be fed, they don't need to be smothered with no3 and po4 or it doesn't need to be detectable, but when you don't have any algae growing on your glass ever, that might be a sign of a system that could be starving. ( again these are jsut troubleshooting suggestions, you might have all of those things in check)

Thanks for the suggestions.......I have wanted to increase flow for months, but I have a few large hammers that can only handle so much. I guess one of the problems trying to keep a mixed reef. Right now I am 90% SPS....just can't bring myself to get rid of the two hammers just yet. As far as the algae, I am very diligent on keeping the glass and overflows clean. I don't like the "dirty" established look that comes with letting coralline (or other types of algae) grow everywhere...just a personal preference. My no3 and po4 actually hold between 3-5 and .02-.04 ppm. Coral are fed roughly once a week but fish are fed pretty heavy. I have done a lot of troubleshooting (while losing blue SPS lol) with no luck....the heavier flow might be a key though Just not sure why it would only affect blues........

Another one for zoa's.
I can actually grow them into pretty decent size colonys then they just start to go downhill till none are left.
Other corals do great in the tank acans, candy cane, blasto's, favia's, ricordea's etc all grow like weeds, it's just the zoa's that have given me trouble for years.

Than from Tidal Gardens has a top 5 pests video out on the web. He described zooanthid eating spiders that lay eggs into the zoa mouth and when they hatch the polyp melts!!

Apparently nothing, I was just doing softies and a few LPS but then received an accidental shipment of SPS and somehow all my corals growing. I have the best luck with my acans and zoas though (but my birdsnest SPS and leathers are growing like crazy too).

Wow! I'm surprised that a lot people have trouble with zoas. When I was just starting out in the hobby and researching the one coral that was mentioned to be easy were zoas. Most of them do great in my tank and are fast growers except once and a while there will be one that grows briefly then melts away.
