IMHO you are no longer a hobbyist when you are out for profit. You now become a merchant/vendor. It is one thing people sell corals to sustain thier system or to upgrade thier equipment and another just for the soul purpose of making money. ...... when people is chargeing x amount of money for something that was a hitch hiker.

Wow!! Excellent Valid Point!!!!!

Any minute now i am waiting for HR to come in a fire me since I am still in my 90 days and peter is some what of a Dinosaur here!
:ops:

Let me see if this helps

Lets say coral A is a piece that has been in captivity for some time and has a proven track recond. We know it requires high light and high flow.

Then coral b comes in as a wild piece, but is sold as coral A as its easy to sell a coral with a name for a certain price. When coral B is placed in the same place as coral A, it does not thrive, in fact it browns outs or bleaches.

Corals that have been captivity for some time also adjust to the tanks ups and downs a lot more than fresh pieces from the ocean. They are usually a hardier piece. I would much rather pay for a piece that is 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation as IME, they are hardier than a first geneartion ocean piece.

Corals are corals and names are names, I think what people do not care for is when coral B is sold as coral A. If it is coral B, then sell it as coral b and leave coral A out of it.

I see what you are saying.

My problem is not confusing coral A with coral B. Rather it is the attitude that coral A will hold it's color while coral B won't.

Coral B must have been kept under certain conditions to get it's shape and color in the first place, if after purchasing, you match the conditions, would'nt you say coral B should keep it's color?

... Lol ...

Two thoughts:

I appreciate how several of you have continued to point us to the enjoyment of the hobby rather than the thrill of collecting the "newest" (like that even exists) coral. I love to share frags that I am forced to trim back with those who are new to the hobby. It should be about having something you see as beautiful. I got into this hobby when I lost my daughter and needed something peaceful and beautiful in my life to keep me going. I am thankful for the beauty of what God has made. He is such an increadible creator.

As far as the solution to the high prices, I think that it is good that some corals are expensive and that people are growing them out to sell. The more we can reproduce livestock from existing collected specimins the less impact we will have as a hobby on the reefs.

IME, Wild corals and maricultured colonies always a lower chance that a piece that aquacultured 2nd or 3rd generation.

They should, but......

The question is really can anyone ever match the exact conditions? The answer is no. There are so many things we simply cannot test for. Established coral have greater room for variations in different conditions to keep its color/growth. That is the biggest difference.

Spoken like someone who knows a thing about DBTC :D

Yup, if people only knew what coral the BAR club has circulating in the DBTC program they would understand the true meaning of reefing.

I know it impresses me everytime I look through the list :D I think its about time start a few new ones and clear out some of the frag tank.

I sell corals to for a profit to support my crack habit, does that make me a vendor and not a hobbyist?

I sell coral when I need extra money. Does that mean I am not a hobbyist? Also I have seen several people post in the thread that have sold and traded and used the "name" of the piece they were offering. Is that a bad practice since we don't like the name game?

No one said they don't like the name game David, Many were just saying they don't like it when there is dishonesty involved. I'd leave the rest up to the ethics of the individual ;)
