I was curious what everyone has done with corals they really don’t mesh with the look you are striving for in your reef. I have removed a group of Pandora zoas, which basically looked like a big brown mass during the day light cycle. A large green chalice which never really had a nice spot in my tank was sent to my LFS as a trade. And now I still have a large group of Mohawk zoas which I just pushed off to the back side of my tank so I don’t really have to see it. Both the Pandora’s and Mohawks stalks would get so large and then out grew their island rock and began letting go to find new territory.

These were all corals that I bought when I was really just trying to get started with my reef. But because of the color and that they spread so fast, I had to isolate and then get rid of them.

Usually post it locally for free or trade - depending on what it is. If it’s common and fast growing I give it away. If it’s a alittle
More pricy I offer for trade- but drastically less then worth to move it fast.

sell them or freebies lol

I actually love mowhawk zoas but they grow too fast and end up becoming freebies or toilet travelers.
The Mohawks are nice under blues, but under whites they are just brown. If they didn’t get so large I probably would like them more.

Same filter lens used on both photos.

Yup very similar to mine...but your‘s appear much smaller. I think as they tried to escape their island rock they continued to grow to find something else to attach to

They are one of the oddest zoas i have.
Sometimes they suck against the frag plug and other times they get like 1" stalks and heads the size of nickels.

Depends on what it is I give away certain ones and kill others (gave away neon green leather frags and gorgonian frags) (killed the pulsing xeina thought I could keep it contained on its own island in the sand boy was I wrong and the yellow polyps came as hitchhiker with some zoas isolated it and man did this stuff take off in my opinion its like aptasia)

Got these as Mohawks originally but they turned pinkish in day and even pinker under moons and I like em so they stay lol but they do grown fast and kinda every which a way excuse the bryopsis I'm getting rid of it as we speak gunna take awhile tho

Ps this is my first zoa and paly tank iv kept in 15 years got a few ricordias and some pink tip fireworks clove polyps but man I'm really liking the zoas and palys

ugly corals dont enter my tank
Thats my new course forward. The beginner stages have passed and now I only get exactly what I want. Those $5 frags aren’t always worth it anymore.

once a coral becomes a nuisance i have zero reservation against killing it off as needed. Kalk paste basically kills anything eventually. If its a montipora that has established itself too well and keeps plating bigger and bigger i will break off what I can and discard it/dry it out for reactor media, and kalk paste the remaining base. They'll usually grow back but it can take a while.

I guess you could give them to your frenemies. Seriously, though, I put some of my less liked stuff in less visible places in my tank. I've actually moved some back to prominent places in the tank after changing my mind about how they fit in.

I agree with your comments about some zoas that look brown under whites and then get nice and colorful under blues. I’ve also had some Coral’s that I liked early and then wished I hadn’t tried them. I either give them away, trade or take to LFS for credit. Over time I’ve learned better what Coral’s I like and what I don’t. We love euphyllia Coral’s (torch, hammer, frogspawn), leathers and mushrooms. Also like theitems thatcan go right on the sand like trachy. I really want to get a nice chalice. Not as big of a fan of some of the Coral’s like favias or other“harder” Coral’s.

One mans trash, is another mans treasure. Just cause you think they are ugly, doesn’t mean someone else thinks they are. Plus they might look different under their lighting. When I first started a saltwater tank, I would have loved some freebie coral to start off with. Better than risking something I paid for, plus all coral was cool to me! I would say to try to give them away. Someone might want them.
