What do you all do with your ugly corals?

I live in the middle of nowhere, no LFS my tank is over growing. I don’t have the heart to just throw some of the stuff away.

It’s not always easy to give coral away if you’re not in a major metropolitan area. If you’re in a small to medium town and have saturated your local base with your easy corals then what? No lfs to go to. Shipping isn’t cheap. I ship coral all the time. I’m happy to give away a 6”x6” frag of Ora montipora spongodes, or an Idaho grape monti mini colony...but would any of you really be happy to pay $40-50 for a “free” coral to be shipped to you?

That’s my problem

First I photograph the coral.

Then, I Photoshop the hell out of it.

Then, I dream up a really snappy name for it. ( A sexy name helps.)

Then I post it in an on line For Sale forum for $1000 with the title "Very Rare [sexy name] Coral For Sale!"

Then I tell the complaining buyer that they are obviously doing something wrong with their lighting!

When in doubt. Start another tank and add all the corals you dont want into that one

This is very true. I live in a pretty small area, my "local" fish store is 3 hours away. Any time I want or need something I usually order it. I have given out a few corals here and there but I've had to ship because there's really no other option. Plus shipping fee is a pain..

If shipping 5-10 acropora that someone was hunting for, or if someone is already spending a few hundred bucks, shipping is just an expected part of the process. No big deal. It becomes a big deal if you’re trying to buy one or two cheaper things, or even move freebies. Basically if the cost of shipping is any more than 1/2 or so the cost of the entire package it basically makes it not worth it.

gimme gimme gimme lol I wish i knew people that gave stuff away. I'd be ok learning how my tank grows stuff before i purchased them. I have been growing some zoas but can always find room for more hahah

I’ve known a few friends over the years that wish they couldve just been given stuff to start with as well instead of spending money on nice corals and then having them die before really knowing what it takes, and the requirements to keep each one alive and happy. When i first started, i think i spent almost $25 on a frag of pulsing xenia and wish i never bought it, but it definitely survived lol. I actually ended up giving some of it to a friend a few years later, and his entire 20 gallon became a xenia forest ;Woot

Yea, thats why I make a list. I usually buy everything all at once so I get free shipping. Lol

I will set up a smaller tank and let them rule it, I bought it and took it home it is my responsibilty to take care of it. I remember early this week a thread have been shut down because the OP said he will conduct a 1-5 year experiment to see if zoas will adapt living in freshwater, everybody was all over his back for unethical treatment of a living creature.

lol, I would like to sell for dirt cheep or give away, but it's a matter of when I get the time to thin things out. It's often spontaneous because something is starting to die because lack of flow or light, or simply over taking part of a tank. But, if anyone lives in or near Marshfield MA 02050, certainly pm me.

Aggressive zoa's, garbage can. All montipora, garbage can. Green slimmer, garbage can. Birds nest, garbage can. Blue/ice staghorn, garbage can. Yellow porites, garbage can. Hollywood stunner and similar chalices, garbage can. When I have a moment to prune coral out, there is no one close by I know to take it, so out it goes. I have two BTAs in tupperware right now...garbage can?

Set up a website. You're throwing money in the trash.

I regularly see spongodes frags that are 1" get sold for $30+. I see 1" pieces of green slimer go for $30.

I think you're way understimating what people are willing to pay for things on the internet. I think most people would be estatic paying $50 to ship something like that.

I have the same problem. Added some no name zoas/palys when I got started back in the hobby as test corals. Turned out they were Mohawks and Pandoras. They were pretty under blues but eventually spread too fast. I've been manually removing those that I can reach but still looking for a permanent solution. I don't want to redo my tank again as it is fairly established with a lot of sps now. Hopefully they get shaded enough to limit their growth. This is a pic of my previous 4x2x2 tank before I upgraded so you have an idea of the scale and how widespread they can be. This was also barebottom

Elbow length gloves, Lots of kalk paste, carbon, and patience. You can kill them down to nothing taking it a few Dozen polyps at a time. Just take care. They’re toxic. So gloves are a must and lots of carbon to absorb the toxins

I keep em and my tank is full of them. However the ocean is too and even a meh coral that grows and thrives has a certain beauty.
