What is your year-to-date $ loss?

I'll start!

So far this year I have thrown away around $275 in the trash on livestock and corals. Yellow tang, zoas, torch, and mushrooms. Granted I'm sure it has "some" to do with my tank only being setup for 4 months and other unforeseen circumstances, but still money in the trash!

I know most of us don't even want to think about the money thrown into or out of this hobby, it's frustrating for sure. However, it's good to have a gut check every once in a while and prioritize. For example me, corals are on hold for a few months while I throw money into my beer brewing hobby.

This year I've lost a pair of ruby red dragonets (really sucked) and a 3 headed hammer. Not too bad, but I've had some close calls. I'm trying to keep new corals on hold as well.

Well this is freshwater. This year I lost 10 red phantom tetras to ich (I don’t even get it I treated them and all the other fish were fine). I think the loss was like $100.

I've been fortunate. Haven't really lost much in the past year. In my opinion, a fully functional beer brewing station will make the expenses this hobby can generate seem much more reasonable. I have to depend on off the shelf libations.
If it's any consolation, as my reef has matured, my losses have greatly declined.

Currently in ICU:

mini colony purple bonsai and a small lepto.

on the good side is that my phosphate finally dropped down to around .20 and monties and easy sps are growing.

I rarely lose a fish that's established in one of my tanks. Unless it's a jumper. It's usually newly introduced fish that have a higher mortality rate.

I did recently have a Christmas Wrasse die. What stinks is that it was seemingly healthy and doing great for 6 months in an established tank. No other fish were affected. It was my favorite fish of the tank. It was an adult, so it may have just lived it's live out, no idea.

This is going to be a very interesting and depressing topic. I lost 6 acans, 2 tiger tail cucumbers, walking dendro, trachyphillia, massive colony of galaxea, 2 heads of gold hammer, 2 heads of a torch, 1 chalice, 1 name brand acro, two random SPS, 1 colony of montipora. Most of this was caused by my clown trigger biting the corals which led to an infection and death. Since then I have gotten the clown triggers behavior under control with an insane amount of food. I am probably $500+

I lost $25k+ in January from a house fire worth of high end corals mostly SPS and Zoas some of the rarest in the hobby and many to be lost forever. Many grown out as well.

On the saltwater side a single large peppermint shrimp a $9. I stupidly rolled the dice thinking that if the shrimp was the same size as my long nose hawkfish he might not bother him. Nope! 10 secs in the tank and he swoops down at a hundred miles an hour and tears the shrimp in half. Oops!

On the freshwater side Ive lost at least $200 in fish. I have multiple tanks and buy a lot of wild caught oddballs. The supply chain from collecter to retailer is much harsher on freshwater fish because they’re cheaper and hardier. By the
time I’ve purchase any wild caught freshwater fish at a store they almost always have some sort of internal or external ailment and are hyper stressed. Perfect combination form quick death.

After our move and late tank set up in the new house, I’ve lost all my mini colonies of signature sps (totally wiped out my collection of 10 sps), PBT, wrasse, maybe 14 rainbow anemone and 1 black widow. Then decided to do softie/lps instead of sps, so far I have lost two new wrasse bullied by my purple tang, purple torch, yellow fiji, and few cheap Zoanthids.

Consider this a placeholder. I have zero losses so far this year, but I just did something i have never done before. Ordered a fish from Live Aquaria

I have only had my tank up for about 2.5 months or so. I lost a clown coming out of quarantine, a Pink Spotted Goby who believed he could fly and a handful of Margarita snails, which I think they were done in due to shipping. The real test for 2020 will be the mandarin and associated pod cultivation costs.
