What is your year-to-date $ loss?

Consider this a placeholder. I have zero losses so far this year, but I just did something i have never done before. Ordered a fish from Live Aquaria

I feel like I just dropped $156 down on a craps table. To be continued....

I had a crash last summer and I guess that falls into the timeline. With that and a few deaths here and there I am well over 1000$ in losses of my colonies, higher end frags and 2 fish that have died. But my tanks has been bouncing back which I am thankful for!

I can’t seem to add new shrimp to the system. Been through 3 different shrimps, from skunk cleaners to fire shrimp. They all die within the month.

Only thing we have lost this year so far is a Red Goni, maybe $50. Knock on wood though.

What fish ?

After not having one for years, I decided I really wanted another Kole Tang. None were locally available, and it could be a while before imported fish are available again. I decided to take a chance....

This year has been brutal for fish already

1x bristletooth tang ($50)
6x lyretail anthias ($30 each)
1x coral frag ($8)

I also lost a longtime resident dot n dash wrasse in my DT ($45) but that was money spent in a prior year.

I've been fortunate. Haven't really lost much in the past year. In my opinion, a fully functional beer brewing station will make the expenses this hobby can generate seem much more reasonable. I have to depend on off the shelf libations.
If it's any consolation, as my reef has matured, my losses have greatly declined.

This tank is a reboot of my previous setup (2 years) since I had to break it down to move. I agree that as time goes on, things will get more established.

As far as beer, next recipe is ready to roll! A little online shopping today for ingredients and recent coral lost easier to swallow.

This is going to be a very interesting and depressing topic. I lost 6 acans, 2 tiger tail cucumbers, walking dendro, trachyphillia, massive colony of galaxea, 2 heads of gold hammer, 2 heads of a torch, 1 chalice, 1 name brand acro, two random SPS, 1 colony of montipora. Most of this was caused by my clown trigger biting the corals which led to an infection and death. Since then I have gotten the clown triggers behavior under control with an insane amount of food. I am probably $500+

That is a hard lose. Sorry to hear this.

I lost $25k+ in January from a house fire worth of high end corals mostly SPS and Zoas some of the rarest in the hobby and many to be lost forever. Many grown out as well.

One life lesson I have learned is pretty things tend to be destructive. And this is where I turn the notifications off so wife doesn’t see this.

I have lost more than I would like to say, but it's the cost of education. As long as I wasn't being neglectful or careless, I can sleep.

Some things come out of nowhere. Fire shrimp destroyed torch this year. C'mon Man!

Got lazy and didn’t quarantine a Scopas tang. Basically my own mistake.

Sometimes this hobby can hurt! Lost a new yellow tang that didn't even make it all the way through qt, lost a pavona and a lepto, and lost a six line wrasse who wouldn't stop bugging my female ocellaris - "Munch" did as her namesake suggests.
