What will a UPS strike mean for the hobby?

Saw at least one vendor talking about the impending UPS strike and how that is likely going to impact their ability to ship coral for the time being (if it happens), and it got me to wondering how many other reef businesses this is likely to impact. How bad would the impact of this strike be?

It could be very bad if the drivers get huge raises and A/C in their trucks the cost of all these luxury items we buy will go up to cover the excess costs of shipping once that goes up to compensate for it all! It's all bad. Those guys should drive for the joy it brings me to get a package from BRS or Eric Cohen and they have a lot of nerve. Get back to driving dudes, you all got my packages to deliver.

If it lasts a long time it could totally mess up a lot of people, way worse than the inconvenience it may cause me. But AMazon, they're for it>>?

Hopefully competition will find a solution to all these issues.

yep that vendor was me I believe.

all I really had to go on was that last week my pickup driver pulled me aside and said as of last week it looked pretty good that they were going to strike, and if they did it would be at least a week or two just due to the voting process and stuff involved with the union.

ultimately I really don't know anything about any of that stuff, but his advice was not to ship after the 28th, unless I heard otherwise. for what it's worth.

May as well laugh at a difficult situation. I volunteer for my Union and it's difficult to come to agreement when everyone wants more for less, just to get their fair share. People will get hurt unless a solution prevents the labor action.

I have actually never met someone who wants 'their fair share'.. yes they want their share, but I have never seen it fair. It is almost a universal truth that people want the highest return for the minimum amount of effort / contributions which almost definitionally does not align with fair. Its a great bumper sticker, but seldom a great policy

I think you should plan a vacation until the strike is over?
Sorry, truly, for you and folks like you who have built their businesses working hand in truck with these freight companies.

Trouble is how can you afford to buy the drinks when there is no end in sight?

I really hope that they find a contract that averts the inconvenience and loss of work day opportunities for you and everyone else that is tangled up in the supply chain.

Yes sir. And in looking into it further (checking news articles etc.), it does seem like it is possibly going to happen. Seeing your thread got me to think about how this will impact you and other small businesses. Hoping things work out quickly. Definitely not a good situation.

I voted for the "pitiful" 7% over three years wage hike that we were offered but there is a group of vocal people what want "to win a fair contract," and they are going to hold out until they get what they "deserve." I am at retirement age and the rejection of that MOU means I won't get any raise now (for the last three years of no contract) and there is no remedy for my situation. I lost, and the loss of wages will be reflected in my take home in retirement as well.
These kids believe they should get 40% raises and feel "disrespected" by the pitiful 7% offer. There is a reasonable chance that they will get fired if they strike and the vindictive reasoning part of my gray matter hopes they do strike and get canned. My loss and theirs wouldn't help anyone of us get our "fair share," and I don't really want to "fight" to get mine.

Besides, I suspect that "The fair share" is what we get when they drop us in the ground at the end of our lives. I don't want to fight to get there.

You misunderstood my opinion as a complaint. It is not a complaint. It’s an assumption that UPS striking would cause such large implications that our government will step in before a strike happens. I do wish for no strike, and I do know why it is happening.

I’d recommend reading about it some to get an understanding of how/if your daily life will be impacted.

The government has no standing to step in on this like they did with the rail workers.

Trying to stay off the political side but I'm going to say with 16months until the next election I doubt the president would be willing to burn the unions.

When they don't offer you anymore, and they won't offer you more then you have to take the "cut" to minimize losses. Or strike and maybe get fired, (certainly won't get paid), or go find another job. The employees have to take one of the realistic options when the other side isn't going to budge.

The most recent offers don't keep up with inflation nor do they make up the losses we have accrued over the time we have been without a contract.

When we lose, we want to lose big, just to make a point?

It really is just another thankless job, underpaid and overworked.

Hey man, i get it. i work 65 hours a week across 6 days. my only benefit is my health insurance is paid for but its not like i have time to get check ups. no raise this year, time off is not an option because i wouldn't get my overtime pay. I'm part janitor, part exec, part opertations, part cultivator, part compliance, part AR/AP, part HR... feels like i'm doomed to be trapped in this role till i kick the bucket

That smell could be the massive profits companies are making while still not raising wages to at least match inflation. Don't forget the Hollywood strike is partially due to them wanting to not use writers as much and start using AI as well as being able to use the likeness of extras forever with only 200$ compensation. But we're starting to get off topic, I think the only relationship between these two strikes are big profits not making it down to the people in these companies that actually count. The same generally with most large companies. Ups pulled over 13billion last year in profits.

As part of my duties, I have to communicate raises and bonuses to my group. As a backdrop, my firm recently had 10-15% workforce reductions. Pretty brutal. Remaining people were still getting 5%+ raises, promotions (with raises) and 95% of their target bonuses and NO ONE was happy.

I always liked two-face definition of fair. The only fairness in the world is random chance.

But that expands very quickly. None of the product we make goes thru UPS but if I need a part for a machine and it takes longer to get it could shut down all of our production
