What will a UPS strike mean for the hobby?

I just want to point out that these are first world problems.

The "ACTORS" are on strike! I won't be able to get my "pet animals" or expensive hobby supplies delivered to my door!

Meanwhile, all over the world, the majority of the human population is drinking mud out of a ditch.

Will go ahead and chime in. We use UPS exclusively for shipping and I actually just finished talking to our account rep regarding what will happen if the strike does happen.
1. You will still be able to make a shipping label and ship packages - however, there will be no estimated delivery date, and if there is one don't expect it to be reliable.
2. The strike will last a week but the ramifications of the strike could be felt for as long as a few weeks. (Due to backlog of volume at major sorting centers)
3. Other shipping services will be unable to handle the influx of demand, therefore, rendering them useless in terms of delivery speed as well.

Pretty much I will not be shipping anything for the entire month of August it seems like just out of safety. The backlog of packages will be insane and essentially cripple the mail infrastructure during the strikes. Sure you could use FedEx or other companies during this but that's also what everyone else is thinking at the same time.

If you are going to order coral in August pick it up in person or pay a premium for air cargo. Otherwise, I'd recommend waiting at least until mid-August to test your luck!

Meh, they have been fighting for a few years now. Also former CEO from Atlas Air came to FedEx as CFO. That's gonna be a UGLY battle, look up the pilots fighting with Atlas Air (Amazon) for a contract.

Like I said in a earlier post, FedEx is shedding excess spending HARD due to the post covid hangover.

But the LFS gets its stuff delivered.... Not all of that arrives on a LTL freight truck or from a local warehouse.

Some of it is being delivered by a brown suited santa claus driving a brown colored sleigh :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:
 
Not sure I care so much. Seems like every other time I get something from UPS it has been delayed for a whole bucket full of excuses whether overnight or ground. Fedex on the other hand has never been late on quite a few overnights and ground. They have even been delivering ground Saturday and Sunday. UPS ground once on a Saturday.

As far as impact for our hobby, we should feel lucky as consumers. None of us are waiting on pacemakers or live organs or medicines.

As someone who was lightly involved in the supply chain for my business, this will be a huge deal worldwide.

Even if they resolve this before the 1st, the costs will rise for shipping. The $$$ for the part time employees has to come from somewhere, and it's likely to come from us, the consumers.

Not trying to be a negative Nancy, but the more I see and hear from people in the supply chain, the worse it gets.

I worked there as a part time loader almost 30 years ago. I worked there for 5 years.
21 years later, my daughter ( I was pregnant with her while working there) starts working there at the same pay I was making!!!! Terrible!
 
Luckily, I have purchased all the coral and livestock that I wanted for my tank. So I simply won't purchase anything else alive until the issue is resolved. The other shipping outfits can't remotely keep up with the demand. More than being selfish, it's for preservation of the living animals that would most certainly perish in late deliveries by fedex, or usps.
 
As one of my old UPS drivers, affectionately known as "Snake", once said, Would you like to deliver a hundred packages a day, with your supervisor calling you asking where you are, in a rolling tin can with no heat or AC?

Well said: people never ***** about a super athlete getting their money, I will never ***** about anyone getting theirs.
 
As a member of a union myself, I fully support other brothers and sisters trying to negotiate better wages and benefits. People assume when costs go up that all employees are getting paid more. That is NOT true with a union. Union employees have contracts that lock in wages for a set number of years. When the contract ends, they negotiate for the wage increases and benefits that everyone else enjoyed previously. The corporations do not want to give up more money, and try to pin the employees against you by creating fear of your packages not getting delivered. My thought is that if we depend on them so much to make our world work, we should support them.
 
I'm currently a UPS employee, I never thought the strike would happen, but being a week away it definitely is a possibility. I will say we have been trying to stay ahead, as in deliver packages as soon as they come in, most people don't know this but if a ground package is expected in 5-7 days, usually UPS will hold it over a few days if they see you have other packages coming, or if it doesn't make sense to go down your street that day they hold them over. If your expected delivery is 7/31 or sooner you'll be fine. If the strike does happen, like others said it may be a month to catch up for ground shipments but air will be caught up in a matter of 2-3 days, those packages are always our top priority. We get reemed out if we don't deliver them by 1030am for businesses or noon for residential. It may suck for all of us for a week but in the end we'll have a new contract and be right back to business. I wouldn't worry about it if you can hold off ordering corals for a week, IF the strike happens.
