What will a UPS strike mean for the hobby?

For what it's worth my UPS guy who I know pretty well having worked part time with him for a few years does not think there will be a strike. thinks to company will offer 95% of what the union wants, and the workers will ratify the new contract.

As a union rep, who is going through the slow opening salvo of contract negotiations in his own line of employment, hopefully the rank & file Teamsters get 100% of what they are seeking.

In reality what you said will more than likely happen, the company will focus on the 'economic side of the contract' when a TA is pushed out, sadly the union will look @ the dollar signs as well

Folks tend to see $$$$ and run with it, but from my experience the devil is ALWAYS in the details. Usually some contract verbiage is missed and the company will always get some small wins somewhere, which all add up.

Maybe it'll mean good things, after a temporary disruption. UPS folks being in a position to do their jobs better and with less stress can only be good for the actual shipping process.

I was thinking the same thing last night. I could not imagine being a postal worker having to deal with the heat of the summer for not great pay

Not a chance. I'd quit the hobby before buying livestock from some of the places around me.

UPS has been consistently bad in my area... delivered fish to the wrong address, lost a package, and tried to return my wife's PS5 instead of delivering it back when they were impossible to find... I've had to drive 40 minutes plus round trip multiple times to get some of these items... Hopefully the strike helps the employees from beings screwUPS in my area...

It sucks the way they handle livestock. I sold some coral to a guy that lived 2 hrs away from me. Paid extra for Ups next day even though ground was next day. I took 3 days for the dead coral to arrive.

If they do settle their differences, do you suspect that it's because they were monitoring R2R and realized how important our shipping needs are and that they would all be a bunch of flexing-selfish-sphincters if they let their pitiful living wages dispute deprive us of our only source of some hard-to-get reefing supplies that our tanks, corals, and fishes need to survive? I think it's highly likely and not coincidental at all. I am glad we had this tread to explain the situation to them so they could get past their issues and work together going forward.

It will definitely effect the shipping industry. Normally there are plenty of scab workers willing to cross picket lines, but with nobody wanting to work these day's UPS will be in trouble. Most likely the Biden Administration will step in.

I hope they get enough to at least get off of food stamps and section 8, I know too many people that work loading and unloading, and aside from the 2 that are already set for life with money, the others aint got ****.

It bums me the heck out that they work that hard come home beat, and don't even have money to spend on eating out or getting into a money sink hobby like ours.

Maybe its different in some regions, but in this region, all the part timers are not paid enough to really live on, and that physical of a job absolutely deserves disposable income. I make about 8 times the annual wage of the part time loaders I know, and we barely have enough to throw money into water boxes, lots of DIY and eating cheap.

I hope they get a kickass contract that makes it the toll on their bodies worth it.

I’m a Union guy. Collective bargaining / contracts a must. Wages, benefits, work schedules, seniority, bidding etc.

They are bumping to like $21/hour from $16/hour for the part time. Full time employees should average around $49/hour. Not sure if that was just drivers or what. Article seemed light on details for now

I can tell you in my area (Western KY) $20/hr is a decent wage. My guys make more than that but they all have nice cars they bought new and nice homes

I own a lawn/ irrigation business in Central Florida. I can count on one hand in the last 7 years a customer has offered me or my staff a bottle of water. We cut every day in ridiculous heat and humidity. Always 9-10 hours a day in direct sunlight. I would sit in a truck with no a/c and run packages all day. I mean it goes with the job. These drivers knew what they were getting into when they hired on.
