What's Going To Be The Next Big Thing?

On the hardware side of things, I think automated dKH testing/dosing will be huge for SPS tanks.
Just waiting for the price of the Guardian to go down! I am kind of a gear junky (whether I like to admit it or not) and would spend a pretty penny on something like this if Neptune came out with one *ahem* @Terence ;)
 
I'm trying to convince myself to buy an Arduino and a CO2 sensor and make a probe to calculate dKH using disolved CO2, pH, and Temperature.

It should cost less than $100 for the CO2 hardware and I already have the other two probes connected to my controller.

Reagent-less, real time dKH monitoring would be awesome.

I am uneducated in this. How would it work and are you planning on making a build thread?

There's a mathematical relationship between the four parameters - dKH, temperature, CO2 and pH. If you know three (e.g. CO2, Temp and pH) you can calculate the 4th.

If I decide to try and build it I'll make a build thread for sure. Should be easy to verify if it works since you can just test your alkalinity and compare your calculated number to your tested number.

It links to a sensor that has a detectable range from 0-10,000 ppm. All sensors I found on Amazon were 400-10,000. Typically home CO2 levels should be less than 400ppm, so assuming Henry's gas law comes into play in our home environment the typical reef tank might be in that range as well.

Maby I missed something but I did not see where in that article it said anything about temp relating to ph or alkalinity. I'm a look into the second link you posted maby it is in there. Or I just missed it either way good luck on doing this

The formula assumes the sample is 77F. I read elsewhere that you need to adjust based on the temp, but I can't find where that was at the moment.

Anyone remember the Aptasia that was for sale on one of the e-sites. They were selling it for like $100 or something ridiculous. People will try anything, and not surprising some people will buy anything. Lol
 
I've been in the hobby for over 15-years and use to chase the fads, etc. JF sps's, strawberry shortcake, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Now I KEEP IT SIMPLE. I do not chase the LED craze. I do not chase the next best sps. I do not chase the next dosing/additive. I think you get the picture.

I use IO salt. I still run MH's. I still use basic store bought timer. Run a simple trade winds chiller. Dose basic additives, etc.

This hobby is far too expensive and things have changed so rapidly IMHO to continue to chase equipment upgrades and new corals hitting the market.

Well sorry to vent, but just giving you my 2-cents on keep it simple and keeping the cost so we can all enjoy this wonderful hobby.
