Where Have The SPS Gone??

There is definitely been a decline in the demand for SPS, which i think came before the decline in supply. I remember back in the day when I was farming SPS for TUBS at exoticreefs, I would send him 30 or 40 primo frags and they would be gone in a week. Now, when I post frags for sale here or on other boards, I'm lucky if i can sell 3 or 4 frags total, and I need to throw in a few chalices just to get people to open the thread, LOL! Many of us "old schoolers' still keep our SPS dominated tanks, with plenty of old school sticks and monti's, but the demand for many of these is just not the same. Lots of these new reefers don't know who Tubs, ROAB, etc are, so the value in a Tubs Pink Sprinkles, or a ROAB Orange digi is not there for them. heck, i talked to a dude at a swap a few weeks ago who didn't know that Mike Paletta is actually a person, LOL, thought it was just a coral name...

I think it is a combination of all these things that are causing it. There is still plenty of SPS out there, though.

Yep, and the fact that lps corals and softies can be kept in a bath tub while SPS are frustrating and rewarding at the same time. Since the general hobbyist today is more concerned with "eyes" instead of 'frag size" and might not possess the mental fortitude to work through the tough times of an SPS reef, the hobby is where it is. I guess its also is about the "vendors" you hang out with and follow. I see plenty of acros and I'm approached at least 5 times a month regarding a trade.

I will always have SPSitis; no matter if my tank has water or not 1smile1

I build my 2nd tank with sps purely in mind. still only have 1/2 to 3 in frags but i love them and its great seeing them grow i cant wait for a year to go by to see the difference :bigsmile:. my firs sps was a brown green digi and i wouldn't stop looking at it, and it was at that moment i knew i was hooked lol. i still have him and hes one of my biggest but they grow fast as it is lol If any one needs to do some pruning and doesn't have a place for the frags to go PM me :xd: keep it up other sps addicts!!

Beautiful shots guys and gals. Nice to see a passionate SPS thread for a change! : ) Mark, that tank is looking better and better everytime you post a pic. While I have a chalice addiction, I am an SPS guy as well and that's about all that is in my display. To go through bugs, worms, alk swings, etc and come out on the other side with growing sticks....it's a great feeling. Anyone can throw some LPS in a tank and have some degree of success if dililgent. IMO, it takes a much larger committment to grow SPS and that challenge is why I got in the hobby in the first place. I look at my tank for hours everyday - and to see my SPS gorwing, it always gives me a HUGE feeling of accomplishment. And after a long day at work and all the b.s. that comes along with the daily grind, it's always cheers me up to see the SPS doing well.

It's nice to know there are still plenty of diehard SPS'ers out there. Good thread bayreefer! Let's keep it going.

Very nice Nick. I'm a SPS lover as well. I have been buying a good many LPS corals this past 6 mos micros, favia and acans. My tank use to be SPS dominated only. But now you can say it is a mixed tank. It's been hard to find many new nice looking acros these days. But I have seen some nice Aussie pieces coming in lately. And I got several of the nicest ones. Theres still some old school sps I'm looking for though. Hopefully the sps will be more in demand again.

It is hard to find new acros out there.I really am thinking on setting up a grafted sps DT in the near future.I think that would be pretty dope.

I must agree with you again sb as it is very nice to see that there are still those who love them some sps and to shed some light on the matter.Lets definitely keep this going and I hope this is the first of many threads dedicated to sps

yah..Canada, Asia , Japan & Europe are big in SPS ! you guys must have crazy stuffs because i know all shippers ship the best SPS to your area!!

It seems like the SPS demand is for the so called new latest and greatest items coming out of Australia. I still love the old school SPS myself, but it can be hard to find and still expensive to get a couple frags that grow slow. I also don't trust getting pieces that are pest free, so that tends to hinder my purchases from swaps, etc.

For the folks able to keep them were lucky. I think most reefers have a hard time keeping them or maybe had a crash. Also they can't see the real beauty in them. Say something like its. Just a stick where is the movement. I like my corals to move like a frogspawn. Means more acros and montis for us sps lovers. Sps arcos colanys don't ship well so a lot don't even make it to the states alive so importers take a risk in bringing them in.

Hi Sara, its our Mother Of Pearl , got this piece in from Reefer Madness when they were still in business as a colony, went through a couple of crashes , we were able to save tiny ( less than 1/2" ) frags of them and grew them out for almost 2 years now. That Colony we lost was one of our fav.:sad: , well better have some thing left than nothing !
