Why does it keep getting hotter

It`s called buy a chiller.. also make sure your not running any mag pumps they are like adding 250.watt heater to your system ..

That's a pretty expensive step to take when all other factors aren't considered just yet, no?

Are you running any kind of restriction on your return pump? If so that will create heat. Everyone tells you - you can restrict pump pressure at return line ,but no-one mentions pump temp increases.

Unless you’re getting in the high 80s, you don’t have to worry. My tank fluctuates between 78-82 daily on purpose. As PaulB pointed out, it was 82 in the Caribbean water today. Coral reefs fluctuate in temperatures all the time and if you do some research you’ll see they can get a lot hotter and be fine. I think a lot of reefer’s drive themselves crazy trying to keep their tank within a degree or less of fluctuation. Then summer hits and their heads explode.

But I agree, if you start pushing above 84, get a desk fan, get rid of the glass lid, and you can get the temperature down. Look into a mesh lid from BRS for better gas exchange.

Yes glass lid .. not much for ventilation... and a little sun but no direct light ... I’m adding a fan to the bottom of the stand and letting it sit for a day .... 30w is led 15w is from a t5
Put a 10 dollar clip on fan on your sump. Lowered water temp 2 degrees in 12 hours. On during day off at night.

If you are resting the pond pump it will definitely run hot.
I had one when I first started out.
I ended up plumbing a t into my return line with a valve at the top of the t leading to the tank and I just had the other part doubling back into the sump.
It helped a bit.
I actually used the bypass of the return to tumble algae in the sump. It worked great
I eventually switched to a dc pump and will never go back. They are great!!!

Hello Porkchop. Are you handy & have a hacksaw? There are plenty of videos on how to build a screen top using aluminium window stuff. (BRS) I have a "bunch " of the large mesh for just such a task. It's pretty easy & inexpensive. This will allow much better gas exchange. Cool down the water. I'd be happy to send you a piece. Pm me if interested. Heres a pic on how I did mine.

Im over In Fontana and my house is normally on the warmer side ... any idea of a smaller cooler system that would work on my setup

I’m from fontana too what a small world lol but I keep my apartment at 78 and I have my ceiling fan on all day and that keeps my tank at 78 79

Just for an update I added an extra desk fan I had to the sump and it dropped to a nice 72 and stays between that and 76 so no worries but thanks all for the advice loved the feedback
