Worst advice you've ever heard

My 1st tank build I was also told to use a check valve and I would never have a flood when the power goes out,

I was also told a Kenya Tree coral was a great addition to my reef tank.......

lol on the kenya tree....had a harder time getting rid of that then aptatia

I've never been to MACNA, only local swaps, but wouldn't it make more sense for vendors to bring something such as (seeded) Siporax or Matrix instead of bulky live rock?

I had a friend who was told that the two fish she bought would be great in her newly set up system: Kole Tang and Flame Angel. Kole died, flame ate her corals added later.

Also hear of one store trying to sell two male seahores to a person as a breeding pair. Thank goodness, the buyer new the difference.

Josh they indeed can do that, I imagine the LR was for presentation and looks, or for instant bac xfer, either way is fine for that ends. I just like to get the convo started w new hires about what their goals are, and the specific time frames and tests to get there vs the old school cycling ways that involve algae and arbitrary timelines

At frag swaps they're not setting up tanks for long term success. I would imagine you could set up a sterile system, dose prime and do daily water changes for a frag swap with no problem. I have sold at one frag swap and I just threw the corals in a new 20 gallon for 3 days without dosing anything or doing water changes abs I had no issue. For long term success it requires a cycle of some sort. Whether you buy completely cured rock or go through the traditional tank cycle. At some point in every established tank there was a cycle period of it happened in the actual tank or before putting the tank together. You're not going to throw dry rock in some saltwater abs instantly fully stock a tank.

agreed you wouldn't insta start dry substates. If there is a difference between long term and short term success using cured items however, that'd be worth mentioning. What in your opinion is the difference assuming the cured lr xfer took place underwater, with no loss of organisms? if you were meaning just dry rocks then I see your take, and yes there are LFS that mention insta starts w dry rock and damsels for sure~ which is something we work against in the threads commonly.

mainly I was setting the stage for discussion about cycling specifics...dry vs cured certainly allows for much difference in speed of start

Peppermint shrimp only go for algae and aiptasia. Pulled all of the polyps out of my coral.

Someone tried to convince me that a seahorse would be fine in my 29 biocube with a firefish, clown goby, and a pair of clowns.

They lie! ha ha Mine would even swim to the walls of the tank and try to pry my snails off the glass and eat them.

OMG,,,,****,,,its probably a real bad t.v. night if I'm watching this, but once I hear this the channel is usually turned rather quickly
Hahaha I can't stand when I here them say that!

Actually you don't need a skimmer to have a successful tank. I know because I've kept a tank for nearly 15 years without one!

Very True.

Some people are actually not using their Skimmers anymore at all or are only using them for part of the day.

They had 0 Nutrients in the Water and the Corals were beginning to suffer.
