I am so discouraged right now with my tank. There are a TON more important things going on around the world today and my tank is the least of them but alas we are here to talk about aquariums and mine isn't doing well at all.

It was doing wonderful and then BAM out of nowhere I get this huge outbreak of what looks like dinoflagellates again. Super snotty, brown, LONG stringy algae that is taking over everything.

Almost to the point I want to rip everything out and start over......

I've never battled this type of algae until this tank and it's come and gone a few times already.

I had issues also, ended up being circulation and clean up crew also feeding properly

I've got a ton of flow and I know the drill, just discouraged! AHHHHH!!

You are not alone. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Hope your tank gets well soon. It doesn’t hurt to pray. God really does know how all this stuff works.

One of the best responses EVER!

It happens, but a beautiful thing when it all works , i am just like you . I just now got rid of my algea, and beginning to put small frags back in tank, i also had a heavy metal issue in water had to change all ro/ di filters , i feel your pain!!! I lost corals !!! But one day i will get this !!!

I feel you Rev, my tank has had dinos since November last year. Nothing I was trying made a difference. I don’t know what happened but as of about a month ago it’s almost entirely gone, nothing has changed. After an entire year I can finally look at my tank and not cringe. I hope you can get it under control, we’re all rooting for you!

so let me start with this line "when you see others suffering, yours gonna look like nothing"
for am discouraged for many reasons, and the reefing is part of them, rebuilding my apartment which gone from 0 to hero in no time.
my reef crashed while I was in vacation in the USA "we met at ReefApalooza NY"
I was planning in building a new tank with "A DREAM" sign on it.
still I'd rant and rant about it, all day long. so before I take over this tank like the DinoFlagellates in your tank, I better stop.

anyway, the line I started with makes you feel better by now, I know :)

Well, you know I restarted mine due to a similar problem, but I knew what caused it in the first place.
The one good thing if you did decide to restart is you are like me in that the tank is still young. Small corals and such.

Any idea why or where it came from???

Very sorry to read this, David. It sucks... I know! Hopefully you can work through it!

Rev, Keep working at it my friend! Starting over may end with the same result. Better to just figure it out now and eraticate it for good. I know Sanjay recently went through a dino problem and solved it with a big UV sterilizer. getting the dinos under a microscope may make it easier to form a remedy though. I'm told that some strains strains respond differently to different solutions. Good luck!

Seriously call me when you need some help, I need someone to talk reef with, with the local club in its current condition.
I'm also in Chattanooga. Let me know if you'd like to come by and help with my algae issues. ;)
Looking to make some friends in the hobby.

Sorry to hear, hopefully you'll be able to blast through it and come out on top :) At least you've got the greatest support group in the world behind you! :) Good Luck!!

Have you tried Vibrant yet? I used it and it knocked out all the algae in my tank. Didn't bother anything else. When I first setup my tank I had a horrible outbreak of cyno I could not defeat. THICK carpet of cyno muck all the time within 12 hours after cleaning. I used Vibrant and time that took care of 95% of it. I would try Vibrant before you pull the rock out and start over.
