That is a bummer, I have had Dino's for the past three months. I have been deep cleaning regularly and pulled my filter socks and it is working for me. I also turned down my red LEDS and noticed a difference
Look at your light spectrum, phosphates, your RO/DI filters and clean, clean and you will get it there.

Water changes are known to feed Dinos by introducing new micro-nutrients they need, causing blooms.

Ya i hear ya. I am batyling algae issues but i also started feeding a lot more then i used to. You can always refresh yourself with some dont give up thread i have lol

Thanks everyone! I battled the same algae in the summer and tried a few different things. The week before I went out of town it started to look better. When I got home it was gone. Went out of town again in Oct and by the time I got home it was back again.

This tank was stocked with artificial rock or dead dry rock I'm assuming?

It happens, but a beautiful thing when it all works , i am just like you . I just now got rid of my algea, and beginning to put small frags back in tank, i also had a heavy metal issue in water had to change all ro/ di filters , i feel your pain!!! I lost corals !!! But one day i will get this !!!

I've lost almost all of my corals. I have never worked harder on a reef tank as far as maintenance and not neglecting it. I'm not over feeding, etc..

Well, you know I restarted mine due to a similar problem, but I knew what caused it in the first place.
The one good thing if you did decide to restart is you are like me in that the tank is still young. Small corals and such.

Rev, Keep working at it my friend! Starting over may end with the same result. Better to just figure it out now and eraticate it for good. I know Sanjay recently went through a dino problem and solved it with a big UV sterilizer. getting the dinos under a microscope may make it easier to form a remedy though. I'm told that some strains strains respond differently to different solutions. Good luck!

Thanks man. Funny thing is after the first bad outbreak ended I add a large UV and it's been running ever since. Got some algae growing in the return tube from it. HA!

Have you tried Vibrant yet? I used it and it knocked out all the algae in my tank. Didn't bother anything else. When I first setup my tank I had a horrible outbreak of cyno I could not defeat. THICK carpet of cyno muck all the time within 12 hours after cleaning. I used Vibrant and time that took care of 95% of it. I would try Vibrant before you pull the rock out and start over.

Man no idea! What did you find out caused yours?

It was my triton mishap. Nutrients fell too low and my solid 20x20 brick of cheato disintegrated over a few weeks, all those nutrients going back into the display. Through off my whole balance.
Fought the brown snot for a few months before throwing in the towel and starting clean.

I just got rid of dino a week ago. The problem with my tank was zero nitrate and zero phosphate due to bacteria dosing, efficient skimming and the algae refugium. So I stop dosing, turn off skimmer and all reactor GFO, carbon... and slowly my nitrate and phosphate raise up and the dino going away.

Real Reef Rock

My theory is that either something in dead rock or artificial rock creates an environment that allows Dinos and Cyano to proliferate. Or, something that is missing from it, that exists in real ocean live rock. One thing that has been confirmed by hobby experts is that a reef tank takes much longer to mature and be capable of keeping more demanding corals when started with dead or artificial rock. It is my anecdotal observation after 10+ years in the hobby is that we had much more success keeping reefs and had less issues with Dinos when real ocean live rock was the primary source of biological filtration being used in the hobby.

Don't let yourself get frustrated. One day at a time. It will get better. Nobody has a tank of dinos forever. Just seems like it. Look at the positives. Your livestock is healthy.

I had a bad outbreak of dinos this year, seems to happen every fall.

I bumped my PO4 up to 0.6ppm, and kept it there. Didn't work.

Tried Vibran for two weeks, no dice.

I then went with a 3 day lights out period with UV; no luck, came back immediately once the lights came back on.

Reduced my photoperiod; strictly blue+ ATI bulbs for 6 hours a day (down from 10). Still stuck around.

Last, I tried three doses of DinoX. Gone by the third dose.

Give it a try.

Dinos are the worst of the algaes IMO. GFO & NoPox took by P too low. UV was only temporary for me. Dosing N & P for a consistent time and testing daily made it finally go away (even though it's never really away, like all algaes its just outcompeted). Would highly recommend dosing and stopping any additives.

Rev, I've delt with so many different growths over the few years I've been in the hobby. It wasn't until recently when I officially gave up on my tank that it turned around. I started up a smaller tank for fishes during the reboot. At the same time, i let my DT go. No testing, no dosing, no water changes. Only fed fish. When fish started to look stressed, I did a small water change. It seemed to help. Its been 4 weeks now without a alk or ca dose and my sps are still thriving!! Not sure how but that is whats going on. The hair algar that plagued the tank is almost gone and dinos have reduced by half. I'm now stuck between helping the DT or continuing the reboot. Just my $.02

What's your current PH at?

My dealings with Dino's in the past was to run a UV, which your doing and slowed the flow through it to increase the dwell time, reduced my photoperiod and used Algaefix as directed. As they died off I used a sock on the system, ran a lot of GAC and vacuumed out what I could.

Worked for me.

Yes. Exactly. Doing less is more in my instance. However, I would have expected my coral to fade away or rtn. I haven't seen that yet. My thought, because I havent tested, is that the coral growth stopped or slowed. This allowing the tank to balance out or fix itself. So by doing this I'm also only running a skimmer and a small 9w UV. No GAC or any bio-media. Just the basics.
