It is. I'm not sure why that was suggested either. Actually some folks reported they got dinos after using flucon.

Actually I have had in cure many types of algae issues. It has been interesting seeing its effects actually. Everyone today uses dry rock and do not buy rock that has been in the ocean. We miss out on all the bacteria and sponge life that makes live rock ,live rock. I know when I setup my next tank I am going full live rock again. I tried what the youngsters do and I wasted a lot of time and money getting a stable bio system. I went thrums Dino stage this past July. Used fluconazole to dig myself out of that hole. Now my tank is back to stable again

Live sand, too. I've always believed the sand I get from TBS is just as important to the initial stability of my systems as the rock.
It may not be the prettiest, but it's natural looking and it works for you.

I agree 100%. I’ll never use just dry rock and dry sand again in a build. Took way too long this last time to get balanced. Over a year. All is good now.

I tried dry rock only for my 187 gallon tank and it was just one problem after another. Bacterial bloom, diatoms, cyano and dinos, which led me to start over with live rock. Never had these types of problems when I used live rock. I agree with the thinking that a tank started with just dry rock lacks biodiversity versus a live rock tank....seems like it provides a pest like dinos to take hold and thrive. My advice Rev is to try and eradicate it via natural means. I believe you said it started to go away when you added chaeto to your sump so I would focus on getting that dialed in to outcompete the dinos. I personally had no luck with Vibrant, peroxide, blackouts and Metro.

I never post on forums anymore, just lurk for research purposes. But I'm coming out of my self-imposed exile to say I'm with you. My tank is 225 days old and after cycling has always been super stable. I had some drab pastel colors on my sps so I got the bright idea to dose nitrate and feed to raise nitrate to ~2ppm. Since that time I've had two months of unconquerable cyano and long stringy dino boogers. I've lost multiple frags because I have to blast them off 2-3x a day with a turkey baster. I feel like I went from 1 extreme to another. My nitrate and phosphate are low and stable, but somehow these nuisance critters have taken hold and won't quit. I'm chalking this all up to a young tank and I will never drop that much $ on corals before 1 year again. Even so, it's super frustrating to look at every day. Just soldier on I guess.

Edit: I also started with dry rock. I think I traded 1 set of problems for another with that decision.

It was doing wonderful and then BAM out of nowhere I get this huge outbreak of what looks like dinoflagellates again. Super snotty, brown, LONG stringy algae that is taking over everything.

Almost to the point I want to rip everything out and start over......

I've never battled this type of algae until this tank and it's come and gone a few times already.

But wasn’t you using TBS rock when you got dinos? I have been considering getting some!

Yep, I was... but in my case, I was 6 months in and basically dumped a TON of nutrients into the tank. Over the course of a few weeks that massive brick of chaeto melted into the system, plus a gallon of other macros that wouldn't stay alive.
An extreme case for any tank.
I'm now 7 months into the restart with no crazy mishaps and the tank is cruisin.

Yep. Happened to me. I believe it’s because flucon kills your pods. As the pods build back up the Dino’s goes down. Just my theory, zero science knowledge behind it lol

I had a lot of problems when I was testing and changing water everyday. I found the less I test even if I see a coral not doing good or receding (pretty much dies all the way, usually just one or two pieces) I just let it do its thing. I only loose 1-2 when things are off. Unlike back in the day when I would test and tweet, every time I saw something off. Hang in there bro. Pray!! It works!!! I've prayed that a rock crab that was chomping corals, die. The next morning that dang crab was hanging upside down from a rock. DEAD! I'll throw a prayer in for you today bro.
