I look at coral sites all the time and no matter how beautiful it is I could NEVER imagine spending $1000.00 for something the size of a quarter. I just dont understand how people in their right mind could even think of charging that much for something. Thats my house payment.... Your thoughts?

If you want it you will pay for it. As long as people pay for it others will charge that much.

Well I can understand a store charging that much. They're a business and are obviously in business to make as good of a profit as the market allows.

I think a better question who in their right mind would PAY that much? I must admit I've been out of a mind a few times ;)

LOL i guess if the money is there but i mean for $1000 I could take the wife on a nice weekend get a way which would allow me more freedom with my tank down the road.

Same reason people buy $200k sports cars. They can, and they want to show off.

Some people have more money than sense. And children starve in our world still, just imagine how many could be fed with a $1000.00 coral booger.

i don't think that saltwater hobbyists are responsible for starving children. i'd go take that up with the church first and foremost.

im really not sure why this topic has been popping up so much lately. there are many, many reasons a "frag" may cost $1000...too many to list here, but some of them are: rarity, perceived value, depth of collection, point of collection, transport, etc.

why does anybody spend their $$ on anything? because they want it and can, simple as that. Your house payment is another guys night out or dinner date! its all in perspective.

this is a hobby, which is a way to spend your excess time/$$. Some of us have more time, some have more $$, and some have more of both. Some people, think any aquarium/tank is a waste of money and cant imagine how you spent $100 on that coral.

To each their own...if you dont like it or want it, dont buy it. Really is that simple.

I agree with Jlobes. To me, $1000 is alot on a coral but like Jlobes said I have family friends that use their Aston Martin as daily drivers so if you have the money they you can afford to spend it, if you dont then dont spend it.

My friends outside this hobby shake there heads when I show them my hardware investment.

Perspective is the bottom line.

Yeah, but there are people that can buy their wife a few new fur coats for a lavish month long cruise, a Bugatti for a regular driver, and live in multi-million dollar mansions too..... its all relative ;)

I hear you man! I don't see the justification for pricing a frag for a 1,000.00 don't care how rare it is.

Walk into a jewelry store. Go to the diamond section. Find a diamond the size a pea (probably smaller). Ask the clerk for the price.

If you say this is different you are wrong. A diamond is just a piece of carbon buried in the earth. As a piece of jewelry it has absolutely no benefit to anyone other than its BEAUTY.

Same thing you pay for in coral. At least a 1000 frag is going to keep growing. Your wives would think you were crazy not to buy a diamond the kept getting bigger.

Agreed.

Rich people have expensive frags and normal people have medium expense frags with maybe a special 1 and not so fortunate people have what they can. Its the way the world runs I am affraid.

I think it's pretty exciting that there is such a demand for a coral to warrant a $1000 price tag, however it is most likely a scam. What I mean by this is that there are lots of "new" acros popping up in the hobby lately. Whoever gets them first gives them a stupid name, which is fine. It makes referring to the species easier for us dummies :) The problem that I have is when a vendor does an extreme crop and saturates the color of the coral. Whether this is done by photoshop or light, it's a misrepresentation and a scam. Newer hobbyists learn this the hard way.
