No need for self reflection I do my part , It's people that react like this about how much they spend that need the mirror turned away so they feel better!

The point is you spend your money as you like and I spend my money as I like.
Nobody in the whole world should have to tell me or anybody how to spend their money.
One hypocrite in the WH is already enough who like to tell us if we can eat Hamburgers or need health care and we don't need guns.
In the last 6 months I spend about 25k on fish and corals in my tank and it was all fun money, and I love my hobby.
As I also appreciate hobbyist who just spend just $250 in the same six weeks on their tank, some of their tanks are awesome looking too.

Attention ALL reefers. QUIT paying these outrageous prices, plain and simple. Force the prices to come down. Trust me , quit paying and the prices will drop. Take a chill pill and relax for a minute...lol. We will all be rewarded in the long run

If you say this is different you are wrong. A diamond is just a piece of carbon buried in the earth. As a piece of jewelry it has absolutely no benefit to anyone other than its BEAUTY.

Same thing you pay for in coral. At least a 1000 frag is going to keep growing. Your wives would think you were crazy not to buy a diamond the kept getting bigger.

This is EXACTLY how I was going to respond to this question. I can justify almost any coral purchase as long as I'm confident that I can properly care for its growth.

are you sure of this?? do you have any clue the pricing structure to acquire these "high end" corals?

Yeah I'm sure, if everybody quits paying prices will drop. Sellers don't want to hold all these corals, they want to make $. Simple philosophy, has been proven time and time again...lol

I think all this guy is trying to say is it really worth it. Personally I dont spend over 150 on one coral. The most expensive frag I have is gonzos mcm which is a 400$ piece I got with two other frags for 250. Its not necessarily price gauging but supply and demand. Chalices are the hot item, vendors find crazy chalices which = crazy money. Pectinia are up and coning now as well. Same thing goes for them. As someone stated earlier there are people that spend insane amounts of money on cars and other material items. I get asked all the time by friends how I can spend so much on a "rock" as they call it. I say its what I do and I enjoy it. If someone has the money and wants it, they will buy it. Its not really the vendors that make this hobby expensive but us. Im sure I speak for everyone when they see a sweet new chalice or zoanthid released, they always want the thing they cant have, its just part of our nature. People can have beautiful reefs with a bunch of corals under 100 bucks. And I mean full colonies of brains, zoas, acros. Like with every other hobby there will always be some super expensive thing everyone wants. The question is just really how much you want it!
 
I personally don't buy $1000 frags I just wait for my friends to buy them and then cut it right off of theirs for half the price lol... The way I look at it is you can buy five or six different corals that are decent looking for about $100- $150 a piece or maybe a little more or less $$ will all those pieces give me the same pleasure that my one $1000 frag does...Probably not….. And most likely those $150 frag's will either die or I will get bored of fast and I will move on to something new... Now if I paid $1000 for a coral it is probably something that I have never seen before and will look at it every time I view my tank... I always have the bad habit of going to a store and getting super excited off finding something that is just average or normal and being bored with it too fast... Some of the stuff I pay big dollars for in the past I Still view every single time I look at my tank to this day... And most of those average corals are dead ...sold... or given away... And usually I take a big loss on them... I always try to tell people there is a big difference between a collector and a hobbyist… I consider myself more as a collector because the only things that give me pleasure are high-end stuff that nobody has or has seen before... My tank has so much stuff in it already that space is crucial... And then there is hobbyist that just enjoy a nice healthy tank with normal coral in it and are completely satisfied with just that... Which there is nothing wrong with I actually wish I could get pleasure off simple normal corals but I have just had them already so I'm always looking for something new... I'm always into quality over quantity... But this is just the way I look at it everybody has their own point of view and thoughts on this type of topic... One last thing lol... The price is usually driven up because of supply and demand at that time if you are really into a coral and are ****** off because the prices so high give it about a year and the price will be cut in half give it two years and it will be very affordable but the thing is you just have to wait for the price to come down and most people are not willing to wait so they just jump on it for whatever price tag is that at the time...BTW... In SOME cases the vendors pay ridiculous prices for their pieces as well so don't get mad at them for their prices..

Supply and Demand is simple economics. Any change in demand will move the supply curve up our down, inversely related to the demand curve. Demand is defined by the willingness to open our wallets.

Simple economics. If nobody pays that price for it, then it's not worth it. If somebody pays that price for it, then it IS worth it. ECON 101.
