Like the 200,000 dollar and up sportscar range people are willing to spend big bucks because they can, it makes them feel special to have what nobody else has, regardless of the actual value they percieve it as special. As far as the other factors like confidence, large wallets, and perhaps limited factors in the rest of their lives. If I wasn't able to have kids and a wife I would probably enjoy spending/over-spending as well. However I personally am fine with 100 dollar frags and nice stuff for my kiddos/wife. Eventually you just have to smile and laugh and hope the price goes down to a reasonably affordable level, this time frame seems to be about 2-3 years IME.

sure..simple economics. I understand the laws of supply and demand. and also the difference between price and value.

That being said, some of these corals demand a certain price based on factors other than demand...that, being the supply side. Sure, if demand drops so will the price. but, its not as if these corals will suddenly be selling for $20. They are expensive to obtain, so the price will always remain higher than more readily available/accessible corals.

Its time to put this to bed. If you want to buy a 1,000 dollar coral thats your choice it doesn't matter what anyone thinks its your money and your tank.

This has to be the silliest thing I've read today. Why even have a reef tank??? Or anything other than the bare necessities to survive? Shouldn't all your money be going to feed the world's hungry?

Go hug a tree and give me a break. Sheesh..
Bwahh ha ha ha ha ha!!!!
Wayne you gave me a good laugh. Funniest thing ive read all day!

I have a little different perspective to throw on this topic. I was in the wine business for several years and represented every $5.00 a bottle stuff you cook with to classified growth Bordeaux that cost several hundred a bottle and everything in between. All of the wines in between is where you find value and wines EVERY bit as good as the Single vineyard California Cabernet or the big name Super Tuscans. I think its all about value. How hard is it to find an awesome looking chalice @ $800.00 an eye? Now how hard is it when your spending $100.00? Anyone can walk into the wine shop with a AMEX black and load up on all the stuff that gets the big scores and the same goes for the hottest corals. I do not begrudge anyone spending thousands on coral, fish, wine etc. I get as excited as anyone when I see that AMAZING looking chalice for $1200.00. I get even more excited when I find that crazy looking coral for a decent price, when all the looking pays off and everyone thinks I paid twice what I did. There is a certain amount of hype in this hobby and the wine business is no different, a lot of people would buy and pay up because they read or were told how special and rare this wine was. Well something happened in the early 2000's, the bubble burst and a lot of people got stuck with a lot of overpriced hype driven wine in their cellars. So when you are spending what ever amount on that hot coral ask yourself exactly why are you buying it. Are you grabbing it because its mind blowing and will fill that last piece of tank real estate you have been keeping open or are you grabbing it so you can text everyone as you walk out of the door with it to tell them you just picked up the very last one.......

I think that no matter what a coral cost if it makes you happy and thats what you want it does not matter what anyone thinks. Its your money your tank so go for it.
