90 gallons of fun

Ok, it's been a while. Time for an update.

I'm really happy with what the LEDs were doing. I am now experimenting with an older style light. I believe they call it metal halide? Just kidding. They do and I'm very familiar with these types of light fixtures. So I popped it on for a growth comparison and its actually showing up the single led fixture I had. So I'm going to order a 2nd fixture and keep the halide on the 90 in the meantime.

Also. I acquired a bicolor angel from a 5yr old reef. He was well behaved and only ate fish food...until he tasted my corals. So I tried catching him for a few weeks when all of the sudden I woke up to an eaten engineer goby and a sump angel fish. He died 2 days later. May he rest in peace but at least now I can move all my corals back!!!!

So I did. And I added a cherub angel and a six line wrasse to the mix. They are all in hiding still. I also added 2 huge pieces of the coolest rock on earth!!!
Ok..time for pictures.

And here's the new rock. Some kinda giant dead coral skeleton. Its porous.

And a tank shot.
I kinda like the shadow in the middle but I think I am going to change the rock a bit to utilize it more sensibly.

Oh and if you get laid off or canned from your job just frag up a chalice!

So how much work do I put into my tank?
I feed the fish and corals with 1 cup of a mixed delightful mess of frozen and powdered foods.

I scrape the glass

I fill the ATO reservoir by turning a knob

I do water changes in a trash can once every 2 months at best.

My sump is not fair to other people's aquariums. I will explain that later when the lights come on. Its still in the basement and not anything like what it is in the precious posts.

Its making my life very easy and I hope it will help others as well. 9:00 ill go down stairs.

Well I came down and decided to just flip the light on since I'll be down here a while. My sump is a 55 still. Drain goes into one side then the water travels over sand and rock to the pump.
I eliminated the 10g I had and now I only use a 29 gallon for an algae scrubber.

Its not the waterfall kind.

This is my own design. Basically its blasted with way too much light and I never clean it.

I have a family of peppermints and about 7 trillion pods that live here.
The environment is very gross and they love it!!!

Detritus slime hair and any other gross crap that you don't want in your dissy all are located in this tank.
Te chaeto is in there somewhere but you can't see it at all!!!

Here's my tank in video

And!!!!

All original music by yours truly as always!

You know my tank by now if you've read this far so here's a quick tidbit about the music

The song is titled Mustang Randy. Randy is a person I've never met, I don't even know anyone named that.

The song is a live improv recorded through one tiny guitar amp. I do all the sounds, rhythms, melody, and leads all on the fly. This song is never played the same way twice.

Thank you and hope you enjoy!!!

So I finally had some time today to start my new mod on my tank. Originally I ha various tanks in the basement. That was annoying..so I sold the 29 and replaced it with a drilled 20 tall and plumbed the 90s drain into it and then that goes to the basement sump where my skimmer and refugium are located. The basement also cools the water so well I don't need a chiller in my uncooled porch where the display is located. Temp reaches 78.1 and gets down to 77.8 when the lights kick on at around 4pm.

Just filled the 20 with rock and 2x6500k fuge bulbs...the rock will grow mass quantities of nasty algae that will eliminate all stink from my display. At least that is the theory!
Let me be the labrat and show you the progress! I purposely let the tank get gross (within reason on behalf of the animals).

Lights off for another hour 5 so hold your horses! Remember nothing in a reef tank happens quickly, especially my photographing.

I can explain a couple tweaks I recently did.
I still have my LEDs but I added a halide for testing and algae acceleration for this experiment. It definitely grew diatoms and cyano as well so that's good. For the test.

I removed the halide and threw up a 4x55w Hamilton tech pc fixture with only the actinic channel to get light to the ricordia in the dirty corner and to give a little different look.

I also added a super skimmer 220 (impeller pending) to the sump to keep o2 up while regrowing my experimental cesspool scrubber :p

Only one coral is truly taking this hard: the sea whip. I'm cleaning it 2x a day. I may have to take it to the sump for a while.

Having a little issue with my brains today...they have not really done this before? Only thing different is the algae growth. Lets see how these progress!

And this is my new pre sump 20 tall that will be disguising and eliminate what's in my display tank.

Also before I go to the basement: my ATO jug is now upstairs. I have a stand for it that I will put up here soon

The jug and the 20g both go to the sump in the basement.

So it has been a couple days.
My talbot damsel is doing a great job training my trigger fish to avoid the corals. He approaches one, the damsel buts him away. Maybe this can lead to a humu in the reef for a long time? Maybe he will fight back when big? Maybe he will jump out onto my wood floor. I hope answer 1.

The basslet is pretty cool. He isn't used to a mirrored back ground so he chases himself a bit.

The cardinal is a 10year old put put fish. He is so calm and the fish leave him alone as well. Can't wait to salt acclimate guppies for him. They eat like beasts

The cling fish. A strange pleco looking fish. He has begun to show himself. When I feed the tank he whips the food from his overflow wall cave. He has claimed the plastic!

Fun fun!!! Time for more snails next time. I added 4 little ones but in a 90 that didn't do much. I have a clean up crew still but they aren't fast enough. I keep selling my turbos to people haha. Stop!

What a goober! My crab thinks he is amphibious. Maybe he is? Never saw one out of water on his own, maybe he was waiting for another wasp to fly into my tank?

But the flower pot is being lazy...
Time to investigate!
The new filtration seems to be slowly improving the life of everything.

Ahh yes, my new light came in! I ordered a 2nd reef breeder light and it really helped!

I didn't like the shadow the single had, although surprisingly had amazing capabilities for being over a 90g! I finally had some extra cash and managed to bribe my woman with a 3rd cat...hopefully that thing is reef safe!

ImageUploadedByReef2Reef Aquarium Forum1373576037.016091.jpg

And my plans for a 2nd light early on payed off. They both fit perfectly on my pulley system!

They are crooked on purpose, don't worry.

Next is replacing my power heads with alternative methods currently being discussed in my own head first :D
